While construction continues on the $1 billion LEGO manufacturing facility in Chesterfield, the company kicked off an environmental initiative to that will bring 1,440 trees to eight parks around the county.
Chesterfield leaders and LEGO representatives gathered at Rockwood Park — the oldest park in the county — to ceremonially plant a tree and begin the Parkland Reforestation Project .
Chesterfield Parks and Recreation Director Neil Luther called the project an “environmentally-focused long play.” He emphasized the importance of planting native trees and the project’s potential to limit stormwater runoff by millions of gallons.
Preben Elnef, Vice President and Program Lead at the LEGO Group, spoke to the company’s desire to be involved in the community. He mentioned other programs the company has planned, like encouraging employees to volunteer locally.
“Our factory is so much more than just another factory,” Elnef said. “We are really glad to call Virginia home.”
