Richmonders will be able to interact with Major General Marquis de Lafayette — or at least an accomplished reenactor — on the 200th anniversary of his farewell tour this month.
A French aristocrat, Lafayette fought in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Decades later, he returned to the United States at the invitation of President James Monroe.
His farewell tour in 1824 included celebrations, a visit to Monticello, and an address to the US House of Representatives.
This month’s bicentennial tour around Virginia will look a bit different, but will include several stops in Richmond:
- Rocketts Landing Tour Visit | Oct. 27 | 2 p.m. | Meet the hero on the bank of the James and get a photo.
- Masons Hall Bicentennial Reenactment | Oct. 30 | 6 p.m. | Reserve your space to step back in time and toast to Lafayette’s historic visit.
- Life and Ideals Webinar | Nov. 1 | 12 p.m. | This VMHC program will include a living history presentation.
