Richmond Gas Works customers may soon see their monthly bills increase by 40%about $38. The city warned of the news in a press release Friday.

The price hike is connected to an international natural gas shortage. Globally, demand for natural gas has outpaced supply. In Richmond, officials say the wholesale cost has doubled from 57 cents per 100 cubic feet to $1.13. Consumers saw a similar rise last fall, although the bill bump was smaller at around $13.
