  • The Dept. of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities and the Friends of Fonticello Park are hosting a ribbon cutting for the Markiya Dickson Imagination Zone Playground on Saturday, April 1 at 12 p.m. Stay after the ceremony for a community picnic with DJ Mikemetic until 2 p.m.
Festival
  • Celebrate with Northside neighbors this Friday, March 31 from 4-7 p.m. at the Taste of Brookland Park event. The street festival will include shopping, dining, drinking, and deals from your favorite businesses on the block.
  • This summer’s Festival of Arts will feature a free run of “Something Rotten” at Dogwood Dell. The comedy musical follows a pair of playwright brothers in competition with William Shakespeare in 1595. Performances will take place the last two weekends of July.
Development
  • VCU has a new plan for the city’s former Public Safety Building site downtown. It plans to build a $415 million Dentistry Center to replace the two current buildings, which were built in 1975 and 1954. Details on the center are few, but it would serve 500+ students. (Richmond BizSense)

  • The Richmond Night Market returns for its fifth season to 17th Street Market on Saturday, April 8 from 5-9 p.m. DJ Lonnie B and High Definition Band will provide the tunes while you shop from local vendors and check out artist Justice Dwight in the Maker Space.
  • The Vienna Light Orchestra is bringing the music of “The Greatest Showman” and other musicals to the Byrd Theatre for two immersive concerts on Saturday, April 8. The light of 2,000+ flickering candles sets the tone for the show. Tickets start at $45.

  • The Klaus Family Tree House at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden has been closed for several months, but it’s scheduled to reopen on Saturday, April 1. Take a look inside the renovated tower. (ABC8 News)

  • Lace up your shoes for the Appomattox River Regional Park 5K on Saturday, April 1 at 9 a.m. in Prince George. Registration is $25 ($12 for students, $40 for couples). Proceeds will go towards Friends of the Lower Appomattox River and the Special Olympics. Sign up to run or walk.

  • Are you a parent or guardian of a student at Henrico County Public Schools? Take this annual survey before it closes on Friday, March 31 at 11:59 p.m. The brief questionnaire asks about safety, academic growth, equity and opportunity, and school relationships. We’re continuing our series on Mayor Levar Stoney’s FY24 budget proposal with a look at how the plan impacts city services.

The umbrella term covers facilities, transportation, utilities, public programming — the list goes on. Here are a few key numbers:
  • $8.9 million more in the city’s contribution to GRTC
  • $14.1 million to address maintenance needs at city facilities | The mayor highlighted priority projects at City Hall, Main Library, fire stations, cemeteries, and the James River Park System, among others.
  • $21 million for the Complete Streets program | Context: Complete Streets is a continuous capital project that includes funds for sidewalks, curbs and gutters, pedestrian crossings, and paving.
There’s also $7 million in the proposed Capital Improvement Plan for park improvements around the city, particularly in Southside.
