For nature lovers

Belle Isle, 1 Belle Isle
Cross the pedestrian bridge and enjoy the James River Park’s most popular site. Explore historic sites and trails, relax on the rocks, do some bird watching, or take advantage of wheelchair-accessible fishing.

Flood Wall Park, 14th St. Bridge South End
Nature and industry meet at the trails around the city’s flood wall. It connects with the Richmond Slave Trail, Canal Walk, and the Belle Isle Pedestrian Bridge.

For families

Maymont, 1700 Hampton St.
The Children’s Farm and Nature Center are both ideal for families of all sizes. Walk the gardens, watch animals, or enjoy a picnic on the grounds.

Pony Pasture, 7200 Riverside Dr.
There are plenty of opportunities for river activities for all ages at this popular spot on the James. Watch paddlers, hike, bike, or fish.

Forest Hill Park, 4021 Forest Hill Ave.
Look for wildlife, play on the playground, or explore the trails.

For athletes

Great Shiplock Park, 2803 Dock St.
Bikers will love this park, which connects to the Virginia Capital Trail. Bonus: A recent renovation added benches, shade structures, and bike racks to the area.

Chimborazo Park, 3201 E. Broad St.
There’s plenty of field space to toss a football or play some pickup soccer at this scenic, 30-acre park.

Bryan Park, 4308 Hermitage Rd.
Head to the center of the park for soccer fields, an 18-hole disc golf course, and tennis courts.

Looking for fun, interactive activities for the kids? Enter: I See Me Play in RVA!, a free event with crafts, entertainment, and food, perfect for a family day out.

The Children’s Museum of Richmond is hosting the event on Sunday, April 30 at City Stadium for kids up to 12 years old to create, grow, build, and read together.

Civic
  • Delegate Lamont Bagby won yesterday’s Special Election for Virginia Senate District 9. As of 8 p.m. last night with 80 of 88 precincts reporting, Bagby had secured 88% of the vote.
Arts
  • VisArts is hosting the first Richmond Poetry Fest in conjunction with National Poetry Month. Attend free events from Friday, April 14-Saturday April 15 including readings, zine-making sessions, workshops, and a vendor fair.
Biz
  • California-based Stone Brewing is expanding its Richmond operations following its acquisition by Japanese beer company Sapporo. Stone wants to double its brewing capacity and its local workforce in order to produce ~40% of the company’s US product. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Development
  • A new development at Rocketts Landing may soon expand to include a 12-14 story tower. The first residents at The Waterford at Rocketts Landing started moving in this month; the $42 million building began construction nearly two years ago. (Richmond BizSense)
Sports
  • If you want to see what’s in store for next year’s championship tournaments, check out the All-Star Wheelchair Basketball Game during the RVA Adaptive Sports Festival. The “95 vs. 64" game will take place on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. at Glen Allen High School.
Concert
  • Trevor Hall and The Great In-Between are playing the Music at Maymont concert series with The California Honeydrops on Saturday, July 8. Look out for tickets on sale this Friday, March 31 at 10 a.m.
Eat
  • Warmer temperatures means a return to rooftop dining. The Q Rooftop bar is opening for the spring on Saturday, April 1. The spot is introducing a new food menu and seasonal cocktails. Reservations are available from 5-7 p.m. — after 7 p.m. it’s first come, first served.
Older Adults
  • RVA Parks and Rec is offering candle-making classes for adults ages 55 and older. Sign up for the free program, which will take place on Friday, April 14 at 10 a.m. at Ann Hardy Plaza Community Center.

PopUp RVA at The Diamond is back this Saturday, April 1. The weekly vendor market is the largest of its kind in Richmond, boasting 50+ vendors, live music, and food trucks. Here’s how to attend.

The event takes places every Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., rain or shine. You’ll spot the tents from Arthur Ashe Boulevard — the market sets up in the Red Lot. Parking is available in the Yellow, Blue, and Green Lots.

PopUp RVA is family-friendly and pets are welcome. Check out the full schedule of performers, food trucks, and businesses each week on the website.

This weekend, look out for live music by Kailey Conner and Radio Riot, plus vendors selling art, candles, toys, jewelry, wine, sweet and savory treats, and more.
