Fun Fact
  • 24 years ago yesterday, Fabio collided with a goose at the opening of the Apollo’s Chariot roller coaster at Busch Gardens. The Italian male supermodel’s face made impact with the bird while the coaster rushed along at 73 miles an hour. Fabio escaped with a few stitches; the goose sadly passed. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Finance
  • Refinance rates are skyrocketing. But home equity rates remain relatively low — which means that now is a great time to borrow against your home. Calculate your payment.*
Drink
  • An electric wine opener is one of those inexpensive kitchen gadgets that you don’t know how you lived without once you get one. We especially love this one for its sleek design and ergonomic grip. To upgrade your wine even further, this set includes an automatic wine aerator and reusable vacuum stopper.

Richmond Symphony unveils new performance apparel

Richmond Symphony Music Director Valentina Peleggi said three words come to mind as she stood before the orchestra’s new apparel — tradition, innovation, and identity.

Few orchestras in the world have departed from the traditional tux and tails, but Richmond Symphony leaders decided it was time for a change and unveiled a new wardrobe on Wednesday.

Ten garments make up the collection. Each piece is designed with musicians in mind — from hidden pockets for reeds and rosins to covered buttons to prevent catching. The new clothes are lightweight, antimicrobial, odor-free, and moisture-wicking.

If you feel like you’re in a Nike commercial, you’re on the right track. The head of the redesign project, Lauren Solomon, spoke about the physicality and endurance required of musicians, calling them “orchestral Olympians.”

The symphony will debut the look at a performance of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony tomorrow at 8 p.m. Get tickets.

From the Editor
As a UVA grad I have a grudging respect for VCU’s new coach Ryan Odom. He was at the helm of UMBC’s 16-seed upset win over UVA in the 2018 NCAA men’s tournament. Of course, the Hoos bringing the championship home the next year helps.
