With a collection of over 9 million items, there’s a lot of history to take in at the VMHC. Plus, they have a full calendar of events, visiting exhibitions, and a cafe to grab a quick bite or coffee after perusing the galleries.
Don’t miss: “The Story of Virginia” takes visitors through 16,000 years of Virginia history with 500+ artifacts, maps, letters, and diaries.

Richmond’s history museum documents 400 years of the city’s past and includes the 1812 Wickham House, a National Historic Landmark. The museum was the first private museum in the city when it opened in 1898.

Open 365 days a year, the VMFA has an extensive collection of works from various eras in art, from ancient to contemporary. Special exhibitions sometimes require a paid ticket for non-members.
Don’t miss: Artist Kehinde Wiley created the sculpture “Rumors of War” for the VMFA. It was unveiled in Times Square in 2019 before moving to its permanent home outside the museum.
Institute for Contemporary Art, 601 W. Broad St. | Free
Take in traveling exhibits by contemporary artists, which change on a seasonal basis. The ICA also hosts several programs, including the BlackGrounds lecture series and events at the VPM + ICA Community Media Center.

An immersive art installation is now on display at the VMFA. “Athena LaTocha: The Past Never Sleeps” includes three mixed-media works on paper by the contemporary artist. Check it out in the Lewis Focus Gallery on the second floor; admission is free.

Willow Lawn shopping center will soon add Five Below and Ulta Beauty to its merchant lineup. The stores will go on the strip by Five Guys which is currently under renovation. Five Below will reportedly open this fall and Ulta in early 2024. (Richmond BizSense)

The opening day of Richmond’s first Shake Shack location has been pushed to Monday, June 12 at 11 a.m. due to delivery delays. The first day of business will also feature RVA Coffee Stain art giveaways for the first 100-200 people in line. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

The Kickers will host an international friendly at City Stadium on Tuesday, July 18. The Roos will face Comunicaciones FC from Guatemala City — no pressure, but they’re 31-time national champions. Tickets go on sale to the general public tomorrow at noon.

Be a trailblazer for the upcoming Fall Line Trail by joining a 2-3 mile guided hike tomorrow. Over the next 12-18 months, 15 miles of the 43-mile trail will be under construction. Register for a free hike and consider donating to support trail construction.
