Richmond will soon be home to another soccer team. The United Soccer League announced the River City as the home of a new USL W League expansion team set to kick off in 2024.
Kickers Chairman and CEO Rob Ukrop took to the field at halftime during Richmond’s game this weekend to share the news.
The USL W League started in May 2022 to develop the next generation of women’s soccer talent. It launched with 44 teams. The Richmond squad will be under the same ownership group that runs the Kickers franchise, 22 Holdings LLC.
The team will bring women’s pre-professional women’s soccer back to the city for the first time since 2009, when the Richmond Kickers Destiny folded.
USWNT captain Becky Sauerbrunn played for the Destiny in 2006 and 2007.
In the Destiny days, Richmonders could witness up and coming talent. One former Destiny player was Becky Sauerbrunn, who would go on to win two World Cups and captain the US women’s national team.
There’s been no announcement yet as far as the team’s name and imaging. Kickers President and COO Camp Peery said the team will “forge its own identity and branding.”
Now that the announcement has been made, the countdown to spring 2024 begins. Keep up with the team on social media to be the first to know about jerseys, branding, and staff announcements.

We all know that Richmond is a special place with a never-ending supply of things to do, see, and experience. That got us thinking — we already spend our days helping you get the most out of our city. So what if we curated a collection of guides that will be updated and available anytime to help you navigate all our great city has to offer?
That’s just what we’ve done. Say hello to RICtoday’s City Guide, your ultimate digital destination for the best ways to get out there and learn about the city you love.
We’ve broken the guides into three categories:
LIVE — Schools, neighborhoods, and unwritten rules of the city
WORK — Top industries, startups, and great spots to work outside
That just scratches the surface. We’ve got guides to local Airbnb and Vrbo rentals, navigating the airport, volunteer opportunities around town, and even where you and your pooch can grab a drink together.
Ready to get to know your city even better? Check out the link below. And if there’s a guide you’d love to see, send us a suggestion because this list of guides will just keep growing.
Oh, and one more thing. For all you marketing folks out there, we have one exclusive sponsorship available. We will feature your brand next to everywhere the guides appear in the newsletter, website, and social media. It’s an opportunity that won’t last long, so drop us a line.

The project is part of an interim plan that involves constructing new underground pipelines, an outfall into Gillies Creek, and an access driveway. If you’re not caught up on season two of “Swagger” on Apple TV+, here’s a reason to get to watching. Richmond-based Afro-Puerto Rican band Kadencia will have three songs on the soundtrack of episode seven, “Homecoming,” which airs on Friday, Aug. 4.
“Swagger” is a fictional series based on the life of NBA star Kevin Durant, and it films in Richmond. Here are a few other movies and TV shows which were shot in the River City.
Virginia’s Executive Mansion is the exterior shot of Lincoln’s house, and the House of Delegates in the Virginia State Capitol is the House of Representatives chamber in the film.
In the season three episode “First Encounters of the Close Time,” the characters make a college campus visit that features shots of UR’s Westhampton Lake, bell tower, and buildings.
It looks like the Byrd is going to be showing the Lord of the Rings trilogy in August, so I’ll be marking off my Sundays now — obviously leaving time for second breakfast.
