Hear that? It’s the scintillating sound of Richmond’s live music venues beckoning you to a performance you’ll never forget.

There’s a stage for any type of tune in the River City. To get to know them all, you must do three things: Put your hands in the air, wave ‘em like you just don’t care, then lay your eyes (and ears) on our guide.
The National, 708 E. Broad St.
Capacity: 1,500

This downtown venue hosts a variety of performers from up-and-coming rappers to larger indie acts to reunion tours. Plus, catch favorites from the local tribute scene and stand up comedy.

The Broadberry, 2729 W. Broad St.
Capacity: 500

Grab a seat at the 60-foot bar or a table, or join the crowd and enjoy an intimate concert experience. The venue also hosts dance parties, trivia nights, and album release parties.

Outdoor settings

Brown’s Island, 500 Tredegar St.
Capacity: 16,000

Several groups bring outdoor concerts to the island, including The National, WNRN, the Broadberry. The site also hosts Friday Cheers and festivals throughout the year.

Virginia Credit Union LIVE!, 900 E. Laburnum Ave.
Capacity: 6,000

The Richmond Raceway plays hosts to this ongoing series, which brings big names like Ringo Starr and Train to the River City. Pro tip: Show your Virginia Credit Union debit or credit card for free parking at Lot D.

Intimate spaces

Richmond Music Hall, 619 E. Main St.
Capacity: 300

Attached to Capital Ale House, this venue brings a variety of genres downtown, from metal to folk to hyperpop. It also hosts drag brunch and record release events.

Open
  • Pleasants Hardware now has a new location open in Powhatan with hours every day. Swing by or mark your calendar for the grand opening celebration on Saturday, Sept. 16.
Drink
  • Recluse Roasting Project is officially moving from Scott’s Addition to a new home in Lakeside. The wholesale roasters have been on the hunt for a larger location for most of the year. Keep up with the shop’s progress on Instagram.
Development
  • Two former warehouses and an office building in the Fan could become 126 units in a converted apartment complex. The 1.7-acre area is located near Cary Street Station. The buildings used to belong to Dominion Energy. (Richmond BizSense)

  • Want to bike and give back? Join the Pedal for Purpose Challenge for Richmond Cycling Corps. Pledge a dollar-per-mile donation in support of the local nonprofit and get started with group rides on Saturday, Aug. 19 and Sunday, Aug. 20.

  • Applications are open for the next round of the Idea Factory, a program for aspiring entrepreneurs with scalable ideas. Apply by Thursday, Sept. 8 to join the fall cohort. Participants who finish the program also get six months of free membership in Startup Virginia.

  • Virginia drivers can now get a special license plate commemorating The Richmond Planet, the prominent Black newspaper founded in 1882. The plate has been in the works for over a year and will cost $10 annually. (CBS6 News)

RVA Rapper’s Delight | Friday | 6:30-10 p.m. | The Hippodrome Theater | $30-$35 | Ring in half a century of hip-hop with performances by Nickelus F, Noah-O, Radio B, Cane, and Reppa Ton.

Jam Packed Craft Beer & Music Festival | Saturday | 3 p.m. | Brown’s Island | $35 | The waste-free fest will feature performances by Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Circles Around the Sun, Eggy, Dogs In A Pile, and Yam Yam.
