Tolls on the Downtown Expressway, Powhite Parkway, and Nickel Bridge increase today. Tolls will go up to $1 cash or 90 cents using E-ZPass for the Expressway and Powhite; the Nickel Bridge will be 50 cents cash, 45 cents with an E-ZPass.
Opening
A new bakery opens in Church Hill tomorrow. Honey Baked Bee will serve cookies, rolls, and other bakery treats. The whole store will have a gothic theme, championed by its unofficial ghost mascot Gary. (Richmond Magazine)
Outdoors
Get free admission to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden this Monday, Sept. 4 for Labor Day. Explore “Butterflies LIVE!” and “Incanto: An Oasis of Lyrical Sculpture,” no reservations required. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for the Whiskey Rebellion show at Bloemendaal House from 12-3 p.m.
Civic
The city is hosting an E-Cycle Day on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1710 Robin Hood Rd. Richmond residents can dispose of household hazardous waste, paper to be shredded, and select electronics. You can also stock up on some biodegradable leaf collection bags to be ready for fall.
Development
Construction has begun on a new development in Highland Park. Chestnut Flats will eventually have 12 townhomes in two rows with a courtyard in the center. Richmond-based Dorado Capital held a groundbreaking event last week. (Richmond BizSense)
Eat
Lindsey Food Group will open a new restaurant called Farm + Oak in the former home of Natalie’s Taste of Lebanon near Innsbrook. The ownership group is behind several local restaurants including Lillie Pearl, ML Steak, and Jubilee. The new spot is expected to open in November. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Arts
There’s a new exhibit opening at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond next Friday, Sept. 8. “Scavenger Deities” will showcase the work of multi-media artist Rachel Schmidt. Mark your calendar for an artist talk that Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Film
Tickets are on sale for The Big LeBYRDski, the Byrd Theatre’s annual fundraising event. This year’s fest is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 4 and will include costume contests, trivia, a bathrobe bar crawl, and a screening of the classic Coen brothers film.
Number
290. That’s how many teacher kits United Way distributed to educators from around the region following its supply drive. Kits included donations of mechanical pencils, pens, tissues, loose leaf paper, sticky notes, and coffee.
