Carve some time into your schedule. We’ve got a festive contest for you to take part in this spooky season — the RICtoday Pumpkin Carving Contest.
Whether you planned to carve a pumpkin this season or not, this is your excuse to run to the nearest pumpkin patch or garden store, pick out your perfect pumpkin, and get creative. Don’t forget the carving kit.
The rules + details:
Create your own pumpkin masterpiece; carve, paint, shave, use stickers, or get creative in a way that is fun for you.
To make a submission, take a picture of your pumpkin + submit it here, along with a name for your art, a short description, your name, and your email address. Submissions are open through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15.
While traditional pumpkin carvings and designs will be accepted, bonus points will be awarded to original and locally-themed designs. (Think: local landmarks, businesses, and icons.) Any submissions with offensive language or artwork will not be accepted.
Finalists will be selected by our team and announced in our newsletter on Friday, Oct. 20. These finalists will go head-to-head for the chance to be crowned best jack-o’-lantern of 2023 — you, our readers, will be the ones to vote — and the winner will be announced on Friday, Oct. 27.

Hanover — envisioned
Hanover approves long-term vision for development

Last Wednesday, Sept. 27, the Hanover County Board of Supervisors approved Envision Hanover, a comprehensive development plan for the next two decades.
The plan — a detailed document clocking in at 168 pages — identifies the need for more affordable housing options and a larger workforce. It also takes into account residents’ desire for Hanover to retain its “rural character.”
Only 22% of Hanover County is considered urban. Envision Hanover identifies several rural zones suitable for development into single-family homes. It also procured a historic destination for the Brown Grove Historic District, protecting the rural area from any future development.
From the time this plan was announced in January 2022 to its passing last week, the Board of Supervisors received 4,000+ comments from residents regarding their priorities on the county’s development and the local issues they think need to be addressed most urgently.
My personal favorite part of pumpkin carving actually has nothing to do with jack-o'-lanterns at all. Growing up, I would insist on saving the seeds from our pumpkins and roasting them in the oven to snack on. My carvings were never all that much to look at, but the pepitas were scary good.
