Richmond mayor Levar Stoney officially announced his campaign for governor with a video posted on Monday, Dec. 4.

The details

There has long been speculation that Stoney would run for governor, but Monday’s announcement made him the second candidate to officially announce his campaign. He is preceded by VA 7th district Rep. Abigail Spanberger — also a Democrat.

In his announcement, Stoney discusses his family history and acknowledges he was the first member of his family to graduate high school or college. He points to his time as mayor, citing infrastructure improvements and investments in fighting poverty as major successes.

What does this mean for Richmond?

The 2025 election is still a long ways away — this announcement arrived 23 months to the day before election day. Currently serving his second mayoral term, Stoney was already ineligible to run for reelection. His term will end when the next mayor is inaugurated in early 2025.

The next mayor of Richmond will be elected on Nov. 5, 2024. There are currently three declared candidates — Garrett Sawyer (a Democrat), Michelle Mosby, and Maurice Neblett (both Independents).

Estes, the largest privately-owned shipping company in the US, has opened its new Richmond facility.

The company was founded in southern Virginia in 1931, and CEO Rob Estes says it’s been headquarted in the Richmond area since the late 1930s. It’s been around for so long that in the company’s logistics system, according to Estes, “the Richmond Terminal... is 001.”

Will Hupp, Estes’ Richmond-based District Operations Manager, expressed his excitement for the terminal’s opening. “This is where our roots are,” he said, “this is where we started.”

Freight for most of the country will pass through the Richmond terminal, according to Hupp, and it has been equipped with state-of-the-art systems in preparation. “We’ve got all the bells and whistles at this facility,” he said.

The new terminal has 98 doors, 41,000+ sqft of dock space, and 4,900 sqft of office space sprawling across 20 acres of land. Explore career opportunities with the company.
