Starting tomorrow, July 18, the nightshade family fervor gets kicked up a notch as Hot Tomato Summer returns. The ten-day fest continues through Sunday, July 28.
☀️ How it works
Now in its fourth year, the Duke’s Mayo event encourages local restaurants to get creative with tomato and mayonnaise-themed specials. The public then votes to help determine the winner of the coveted Golden Tomato Award.
Hot Tomato Summer will take six cities by storm this year. It began in Richmond in 2021, but now includes Charleston, Greenville, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Knoxville.
🍅 What we’re trying
There are 100+ restaurants participating in our region. Here are some specials we’ve got our eyes on.
Neighbor | Last year’s Golden Tomato winner returns with the Hot Tomato Summer Pie filled with diced tomatoes, Duke’s, onion, cheddar, and mozzarella.
Continental Manchester | Specials include a fried green tomato and hot honey sandwich and a charred tomato wing sauce.
Millie’s Diner | The Summertime Trainwreck will have Duke’s biscuits topped with scrambled eggs, white cheddar, pulled pork, maple glazed bacon, and roasted tomato gravy.
Nate’s Bagels | The Duke’s Summer Staple promises an elevated BLT with a tomato “big enough to cover the bagel.”
Ruby Scoops | Try the Duke’s Mayo ice cream sandwich with buttered pound cake, sweet and spicy tomato jam, and tomato watermelon sorbet.
Zorch Pizza | Get the Zried Zreen Zomatoez with fried green tomatoes, bacon jam, pimento cheese, Parmesan, and Romano by the slice or as a whole pie.
