A new exhibit at the VMFA centers on the work of Beat poet and experimental painter Ted Joans. One of the few Black artists of the Beat movement, Joans painted in a style he called “jazz action.” The exhibit features 31 works in watercolor, ink, pencil, collage, and crayon — see it now through Nov. 17. ReEstablish Richmond, a nonprofit helping refugees and asylum seekers settling in the River City, is on pace to help 200 new Virginians get their driver’s licenses this year. The organization offers workshops, language assistance, and scholarships to newcomers to ease the process. (VPM)

The developers of the Diamond District have hit another bump in the road — they are now being sued by Republic Properties, who were formerly involved in the project. The lawsuit alleges that Thalhimer Realty Partners and Loop Capital violated their partnership agreement. (Richmond BizSense)

$100 million. That’s how much the College of William & Mary has received from philanthropist Jane Batten to put towards its (newly renamed) Batten School of Marine Science. The money will improve the school’s ability to teach and research topics like sea level rise, increased storm intensity, and agricultural land loss. (Virginia Mercury)

Much like craft breweries, distilleries and tasting rooms have popped up across Richmond for folks looking for local libations.
We’ve found seven local distilleries with something for any spirit stan.
Belle Isle Moonshine | Belle Isle sells bottles with wild infusions such as Honey Habanero. You can also try out a canned cocktail like the Blood Orange Smash.
Virago Spirits | Sign up for a distillery tour to sample an array of Virago’s offerings.

I successfully avoided taking any science classes during my four years at William & Mary, but I knew a lot of folks who would’ve been thrilled by a revamped Marine Science school. I don’t know much about what’s going on under water, but I’m glad someone does.
