Tell us what you think about the new ballpark renderings
Here’s what you can expect from the future ballpark. | Rendering via city documents
The journey toward a new baseball diamond continues. With site prep work reportedly underway, the design team presented the latest ballpark renderings to the Urban Design Committee last week.
We’re digging into the designs and want to hear from readers. We’ll ask some prompting questions throughout our breakdown — look out for the speech bubble emoji. 💭
First, some facts
According to the final application, the cost of the stadium is expected to be $110 million. The city announced in July that it had sold $130 million in bonds to fund the construction.
When complete, the stadium will be owned by the Economic Development Authority of the City of Richmond.
The new ballpark will move the entrance off Arthur Ashe Boulevard.

Breaking down the designs
The new stadium will welcome guests near the outfield, with the entry plaza backing up to the future “Festival Street” perpendicular to Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The concourse will wrap around the whole field.
💭 Are you more likely to walk around and explore the stadium or stay in your seat to watch the game?
Richmonders can expect more amenities at the new ballpark. Plans include space for a beer garden and cabanas themed around Richmond’s train history.
💭 What brewery would be a must-have at the new ballpark?
Other amenities include a baseball-themed public play area for kids, a lawn terrace, and a picnic terrace. There are also plans to include a mural on the concourse walking path.
💭 Do you think terrace areas should be ticketed or open?

What’s next?
The Planning Commission will consider the designs, along with the recommendations from the Urban Design Committee. Its next meeting is on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
The city expects the groundbreaking to take place in August and construction to begin in the fall.

New bagel shop coming to Northside

A new bagel shop is headed to Brookland Park Boulevard. Julio’s Bagels comes from Pizza Bones owner Ashley Patino.
Earlier this month, Richmond BizSense reported that a lease had been signed and a building permit filed for the shop. It will be located in the former Ms. Bee’s Juice Bar, which recently moved to Jackson Ward.
Richmonders are passionate about bagels, but there are surprisingly few dedicated shops. Within city limits, Nate’s in the Fan and Chewy’s in Carytown are the two main options, but Cupertino’s in Henrico is worth the drive for many.
The bagel scene is picking up in Richmond. Nate’s is working on a second location in Scott’s Addition and buzzy pop-up Sunday Bagel is gaining steam at events around the city.
An opening date for Julio’s has not yet been announced, but you can follow the Instagram for updates.
