Meet a few of Richmond’s newest eateries and get a sneak peek at upcoming openings.

Brazen | 2028 W. Cary St.
Sit down and stay a while at The Fan’s new restaurant, a mellow spot offering a fusion of casual, slow-cook eats and elevated dining — and there’s an outdoor patio.

Our menu picks: “Base Camp Chili Wings,” baked feta + panna cotta for dessert

The Beet Box | 2400 Jefferson Ave.
Meet Church Hill’s new pressed juice and smoothie bar. You may be familiar with their original Carytown location, but this spot still feels brand new to plenty of East End folks.

Our menu picks: The “Green Light” smoothie bowl (for matcha lovers) and the “Princess Peach” smoothie
The owner of The Beet Box leans over the counter wearing a muted green shirt and a light blue ballcap hat. In the background, the wallpaper features colorful beets and framed photos of musicians.

C&P Baking Co. | 1717 E. Franklin St.
This small biz bakery has moved from pop-up events to an official brick-and-mortar location in Shockoe Bottom.

Our menu picks: Haitian bread, coffee cake, and homemade strawberry milk (oat milk substitute available)
Two trays of breaded parties and biscuits sit behind a glass display with "beef Faitian patty" and "jalepeño cheddar biscuit" written on it.

Ask an expert: Addressing loose skin after semaglutide injections

Presented by Synergy Face + Body by Travis Shaw MD

Semaglutide prescriptions (like Ozempic and Tirzepatide) rose 5.65% in NC from 2023 to 2024, confirming that these injections continue to be one of the most popular treatments in aesthetics.

Nationwide, nearly ~6% of Americans are now on a prescription for these drugs, which are proven to help patients shed 15-22% of their body weight with a customized plan.

But what happens after the weight is gone? We asked the experts at Synergy Face + Body by Travis Shaw MD:

Leftover loose skin

Loose skin is a common concern for patients post-weight loss. Synergy typically recommends a combination of collagen-boosting treatments and injectables.

Rebuilding collagen

There are a growing number of treatments, including Sculptra, Sofwave, and RF Microneedling, designed to stimulate collagen production in the body. This important protein comprises up to 80% of your skin and has been shown to help naturally restore elasticity over time.

These treatments can also be used in combination with fillers to maximize results.

News Notes

Number

$30 million. That’s how much the Brown’s Island Improvement Plan is slated to cost. Partnering with Venture Richmond, this revitalization process has been a long time coming, but recent project approvals by the city’s planning commission may kickstart new momentum. Check out some reader-submitted ideas for this riverside development. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Biz

Perly’s on East Grace Street has a new landlord and co-owner, but don’t panic. Business is expected to continue as usual at this local eatery run by the Roberts and Giavos families. Check out today’s article featuring the Giavos family’s upcoming restaurant venture, Lafayette Tavern. (Richmond BizSense)

Health

Last week, VCU Health opened a $38 million liver care center focusing primarily on pre-and post-operative care. The 39-bed facility is located in Downtown Richmond’s Main Hospital and occupies the space of a now-relocated pediatric unit.
A time-traveling pothole at Leigh and Belvidere Street has earned a spotlight on Reddit. Spanning several feet, the pothole reveals Richmond’s historic cobblestone streets, now paved over — well, not entirely paved over. It’s a ground-breaking glimpse at history and a sure-fire way to damage your car, so be on the lookout.

Richmond Poetry Fest is returning to VisArts Friday, April 11-Saturday, April 12. This free, two-day event includes live readings, a unique art exhibition + a lineup of activities, crafts, and local vendors. Volunteer sign-ups are open now.

The Wrap

In other food-related news, Keya’s potato chips, founded by Richmonder Keya Wingfield, have been spicing up RVA’s snack scene. I currently have both the “Black Salt” and “Bombay Spice” flavors in my pantry, and I used the latter on my sandwich for lunch yesterday — 10 out of 10.

Consider the crumpled bag (and Teemo’s curiosity) a sign of just how good they are.
