The Virginia Department of Emergency Management announced the cancellation of a $12 million federal grant to improve Richmond’s water treatment plant. City officials do not expect this cancellation to immediately affect plant operations or halt ongoing improvements following the January water crisis. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Community
Today is your last chance to vote for Richmond’s People’s Budget and choose the community improvements you want to see implemented in your neighborhood. Voting is open now until tonight at 11:59 p.m.
Outdoors
Have you ever noticed the bright green pond at Bryan Park? I used to imagine it was filled with matcha tea, but it’s not green anymore. This week, volunteers and park representatives celebrated the successful restoration of Azalea Garden Pond, now rippling with clearer, cleaner water. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Food
Nate’s Bagels is now taking orders for pastel Easter bagels — reminding anyone else of Spongebob’s “pretty patties”? To place your order, fill out a catering form by tomorrow, April 16, at 8 a.m. Bagels will be available for pickup on Saturday, April 19 + Sunday, April 20.
Concert
RVA’s next symphonic film experience is soaring in via broomstick. Altria Theater will host “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” backed by the Richmond Symphony in Feb. 2026. We realize that’s quite a long time away, but you can grab tickets as early as Friday, April 18, at 10 a.m., with presale options available sooner.
Active
Did you participate in Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K this weekend? Local photographer Daniel Bowler may have captured your mid-run moment. Visit this site to view 1,200+ action shots and see if you can find yourself — photos are free to download.
Feel Good
You’ve probably seen art prints and stickers (like our 2024 voter stickers) that associate Richmond with opossums — an unconventional emblem of RVA mentality. If you need a Richmond-themed pick-me-up today, check out this adorable critter spotlighted on the RVA Reddit channel.

Give the planet (and your closet) a break this Earth Day — Tuesday, April 22 — by donating your gently-used items to Goodwill. Your random collection of stuff could find a new home or even be recycled into asphalt or turf. Find your nearest Goodwill.*

$1,300. That’s what you could spend on a brand new tablet, smart watch, and noise-canceling earbuds — or what you could spend overpaying for car insurance. If you like the former option, see what you could save by switching car insurance providers.*
The Buy
A breathable long-sleeve tee, great to pair with jeans and jackets on cool spring days.
New editor check-in. I stepped in as RICtoday’s newsletter editor a little over a month ago, and it’s been so fun. That being said, I’m still learning how best to represent our readership as a whole.
I want to hear from you. What do you want to see featured in the coming weeks/months? More restaurant news? Civic? Outdoors? Have any headlines passed that you wished we had covered? Events you want to see? Let me know — I’m all ears.
