Why this coastal stretch keeps locals coming back

CrystalCoastNC_WhistleContent_June2025.gif
85 miles of picture-perfect beaches and 11 waterfront communities? Count us in. | Photos via Crystal Coast NC
With 85 miles of shoreline and 11 walkable waterfront towns, North Carolina’s Crystal Coast blends natural beauty with laid-back charm to create “paradise on Earth” (they call it the Southern Outer Banks® for a reason).

This summer, trade city crowds for:
  • Wide beaches at Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle, perfect for shelling or sunset strolls
  • Wildlife encounters, from ferry-accessible Shackleford Banks (home to wild horses) to the sea turtles of Cape Lookout
  • Hands-on history at Fort Macon and the North Carolina Maritime Museum
  • Relaxed stays everywhere from cozy downtown B&Bs to waterfront resort suites
  • Night skies like nowhere else at Cape Lookout’s International Dark Sky Park
  • Small-town arts + eats in Beaufort and Morehead City, where galleries and seafood shacks line the harbor
Just bring your flip-flops — they’ll handle the rest.^

News Notes

Development

A 22-acre Henrico County development is one step closer to reality. Officials approved plans for the North End at Innsbrook project, set to introduce apartments, restaurants, retail space, and office space to the area of Nuckols Road and Interstate 295. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one. (Richmond BizSense)

Watch

Are you ready to rock out on the riverfront? Here’s a look at the brand new Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront. Richmond’s newest live music venue has a capacity of 7,500, and is getting ready for a stellar inaugural season in the River City. The first show is this Saturday, June 7. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Health

A new mental health services facility is coming to Powhatan. Officials with Goochland Powhatan Community Services gathered at 3832 Old Buckingham Rd. earlier this week for a ceremonial groundbreaking on the $3 million center. Construction should finish sometime next spring. (Richmond BizSense)

Quoted

“His quick thinking and selfless bravery are nothing short of heroic.” Those were words written by Petersburg Fire-Rescue about a remarkable local 12-year-old. Young Ramir Parker didn’t hesitate when a fire broke out in his house, getting his grandmother and two infant brothers to safety.

Opening

For some, coffee is a must when working. For those in Brookland Park, that’s going to become a lot easier with new coworking space Brandery Richmond opening above the Smoky Mug coffeeshop this summer. Warning: It might be hard to focus with the wafts of roasted beans. (Richmond BizSense)

Edu

Anna Julia Cooper School is moving ahead with a $12 million expansion plan. City Council approved the private school’s plans earlier this week, which will see a new building built across the street from its East End campus. The school currently serves 200 children from low-income families. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Have you ever wondered what Maymont looked like during Victorian times? Well here’s your chance — sort of. The park used to host an event called Victorian Days, where local folks would dress up in garb from a bygone era. We’d love to see this return. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

The Wrap

From Editor Patrick

It’s the perfect time of year to go to Shenandoah National Park, in my opinion.

The crowds can get crazy in the fall, the weather is warm right now (but not too hot), and the spring leaves have fully bloomed. No surprises here — we’ve got a guide.
