Our “Know Your City” series takes a closer look at the familiar parks, community hubs, and stories that define everyday life in Richmond. Fall in love with your city all over again, starting with the park that’s got it all.
Dorey Park, opened in 1982, sits just past the eastern edge of the city in Varina. The 400-acre space has just about everything you could want for a day spent outside:
Multipurpose athletic complexes
An 18-hole disc golf course
Forested trail systems
A dog park with separate sections for large and small dogs
Five miles of equestrian trails
A splash pad (for summers like this)
But did you know that Dorey Park roots its history back to an early 20th-century dairy farm?

This past weekend, I stopped by Fountain Bookstore’s new location, which is just across the street from its former Shockoe Slip spot. It’s very well-organized, and I highly recommend reading the staff-pick notes, which are flagged along the shelves.
Plus, I noticed these “attic journals” by the checkout, made with recycled vintage covers. Thought it was a neat idea for a gift, even if just to yourself.
