Destiny Chew’s original booth was crafted overnight out of cardboard and paint, but she’s since refurbished the setup with wood and additional accessories. | Photo via Destiny Chew
At the beginning of September, local artist and content creator Destiny Chew quit her job to pursue a career in art.
She didn’t know what would come next, but after following into a social-media-inspired whim, she’s now booking artist pop-ups at street fairs, business launches, and weddings across the state.
Her creative outlet? A DIY “doodle booth,” designed for sketching portraits of strangers in the style of photobooth strips.
Her first Carytown pop-up took place in mid-August. Since then, Chew’s doodle booth has booked events around the region, connecting her with some unexpected stories along the way.

The Richmond “Gun Hole” is back. In 2024, a viral handgun imprint on a neighborhood sidewalk took the city by storm. Soon after, the site was leveled with concrete, and many Richmonders believed the “Gun Hole” was gone forever. Turns out, a nearby resident had saved a chunk of the impression. Next week, it will be on view at The Valentine. (Richmond Times Dispatch + RVA Mag)
