Hometown bagel heroes

Representing Richmond with pride. This past weekend, Baltik’s Bagels won the People’s Choice Award at New York BagelFest.

The annual competition celebrates the modern bagel and the world-class bagel buffs who make our mornings go ‘round. Baltik’s first opened shop in October 2024, but its impact transcends Forest Hill Avenue.

Congratulations, Baltik’s. We’ll be celebrating with a River City Sunrise bagel.

News Notes

Sports

New outfits unlocked. The Flying Squirrels have new baseball uniforms, (and the players showed them off in a fashion-forward photoshoot). Along with some fresh logo designs, we were particularly amused by a new signature font — “Squirrely Script.”

Open

Adopt a dog, buy a candle, and stock up on gifts in the same shop. Now open in Midlothian, Sanctuary Rescue is an adoption center and boutique hoping to garner more foot traffic (and love for the pups) through its dynamic offerings. (CBS 6)

Quote

“Special guests will be outside. You know the vibes.” Local cycling group Broad Street Bullies will ride out to the VMFA today, Nov. 18, for the premiere of Alicia Keys’ and Swizz Beatz’s new exhibit. Take-off is at 5:30 p.m. at the Carytown Koger. The special guests in question? Show up and see.

Awards

Who were the winners of last weekend’s Richmond Marathon? Sam Montclair of North Carolina finished first overall with a time of 2:20:17. Richmonder Casey Mulroy was the first to cross the finish line in the women’s race with a time of 2:44:39. See results for the half-marathon and 8k. (12 On Your Side)

Watch

You’ve heard of the Richmond Marathon, but have you heard of the T. Rex Run? This past weekend, dozens of bobbling dinosaurs traversed the trails of Dorey Park. We’ll stop explaining so you can see for yourself.

List

When were the hottest and coldest falls in RVA history? According to WRIC, the hottest fall was in 1881, averaging 65.8º. The coldest took place 1917, averaging 54.8º. Out of the top recorded averages, see where 2024 snuck into the ranks.

Real Estate

Did you know there are ~25,000 castles in Germany? National Geographic rounded up their top 10, featuring hilltop views, medieval vibes, and stunning historical charm. Looking for a castle of your own? We’re still gawking over this French-inspired manor in Charlottesville.

The Wrap

We love our local legends who have been dishing out tradition for years, but we also love to see a new biz thrive.

Baltik’s People’s Choice Award not only recognizes the team’s expertise but also their community-driven attitude, which must have shone brightly at BagelFest. As a personal fan of Baltik’s, I’m throwing in “People’s (Bagel) Princess” as an extra title.
