Making Richmond streets safer is a community effort — and that’s the core focus of this local initiative.

Vision Zero aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries while promoting safe, healthy, and equitable streets for everyone.

Residents are encouraged to join by:
  • Buckling up
  • Avoiding distractions while driving
  • Sharing the road with all users
  • Obeying speed limits
  • Never driving impaired
City leaders, including Mayor Danny Avula, recently joined residents in taking the pledge, underscoring Richmond’s commitment to safer streets.
Help create a safer community

News Notes

Open

The Giavos family’s local empire has expanded once again. Quietly and stylishly, Lafayette Tavern opened its doors in Malvern Gardens, across the street from the empire flagship Stella’s Grocery. Ready to try it out? Check out the food + drink menus.

Sports

Will VCU play at the new CarMax Park stadium? The call is up in the air. Despite a public agreement in October, VCU is reportedly no longer joining the inaugural stadium schedule. However, Mayor Danny Avula and the VCU president remain optimistic. (WRIC + Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Community

The City of Richmond has scheduled four community meetings to facilitate public feedback and address seat-belt safety initiatives. The first meeting will take place tomorrow, Jan. 14, from 5-7 p.m. at Main Street Station.

Plan Ahead

Butcher Brown, a Grammy-nominated jazz + funk group from RVA, is performing at The National later this month. If you weren’t already aware, we’ve got an exciting resource for you: our monthly Plan Ahead, packed with 20+ events to look forward to each month. You’ll never be out of the loop again.

Announced

Hold onto your Christmas trees a little longer. Due to last weekend’s weather, Richmond’s Bring One for the Chipper recycling event has been rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

State

Flu cases are spiking nationwide, and it’s no different in Virginia. See the stats. Dr. Raza Cheema with Patient First in North Chesterfield recommends folks get flu shots, wash their hands, wear masks, and avoid crowds while sick to help prevent exposure. (12 On Your Side)

The Wrap

Consider this my personal recommendation to grab tickets for the Butcher Brown show at The National later this month. I saw the group perform with the Richmond Symphony back in 2023 — so good.

If you’re not familiar with the Richmond-based quintet, check out the group’s Tiny Desk Concert from 2024.
