Borrow a snow shovel today; help take care of your block this weekend. That’s community action in motion.

Local nonprofit Richmond ToolBank has rounded up hundreds of winter-weather resources to help folks gear up for this weekend’s inclement forecast. Literally over 200 shovels we checked in with Executive Director Toby Vernon.

Snow shovel pick-ups

Individuals can borrow snow shovels for free, available on-site until 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23. The nonprofit is located at 1407 Cummings Dr. in the Diamond District.

Once you’re at the facility, simply provide your name, borrow, and return. Vernon suggests folks arrive as early as possible for shovel pick-ups, as they may run out before 6 p.m.

Additional equipment

As for nonprofits and community-based organizations, the team has assembled a haul of additional winter equipment — all with handling fees waived. Find the equipment list and pick-up contact in the full article.

For more than four decades, the Pregnancy Resource Center of Metro Richmond has served as an advocate for women and families navigating unexpected pregnancy.

Rooted in a mission of compassionate care, the Center provides free and confidential resources, practical assistance, and support from two locations in Henrico and Richmond.

To date, more than 40,000 women and families have received support, including:
  • Professional pregnancy testing
  • Medical confirmation of pregnancy with ultrasound
  • Ongoing support through parenting education, counseling, and relationship guidance for both men and women
All services are available to the general public.

Think you might want to get involved? Richmonders can contribute to the Center’s mission in a variety of ways, including:
  • Volunteering as a patient advocate
  • Assisting with parenting education
  • Sponsoring events
  • Donating resources
  • Serving as a social media ambassador
...and more. Each role helps ensure that these resources remain accessible to families across the community.

News Notes

Announced

On the heels of this week’s major expansion update, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has revealed its 2026 special exhibitions: an interpretive VA250 collection, “India’s Great Mughals,” the return of “Fine Art and Flowers,” and a collection of “The Impressionist Revolution.” Find details and dates.

Coming Soon

An NYC-based burger chain is opening its first location in Henrico, reimagining a former Wendy’s building on Brook Road. Holy Burger awaits an official opening date, but patrons can expect 100% halal beef, signature sauces, and plant-based patty options, according to Henrico Citizen.

Civic

The City of Richmond will discuss an upcoming pedestrian safety project on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 5-7 p.m. at Main Street Station. Locals can filter in and out throughout the event to review and comment on a Streetscape Project in the Chimborazo area — see the proposed improvements.

Community

That same evening, Thursday at 6 p.m., Bike Walk RVA will host a candlelight vigil in memory of traffic fatality victims in Richmond. Organizers invite individuals to “Bring photos of your loved ones, or join us before the vigil to make signs of remembrance.”

Read

Agatha Christie, James Baldwin, Virginia Woolf, and H.P. Lovecraft — Brian’s Books is restocking some classics for your winter-weekend reading. The Church Hill store will remain open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the weekend, depending on the weather, of course.

Kids

Online registration for Maymont’s youth summer camps is now open. What’s in store for RVA’s next generations? Life on the Wild Side, Rhythm and Rhyme, and Tales from the 100-Acre Woods, to name a few program options. Editor Elise: Personally, I’d lock in for Donkeys and Dragons.

Number

16. That’s the record-breaking number of nominations “Sinners” received for this year’s Oscars. Released in April, it will be hard to find it at a local theater, but some other nominated flicks are still on the schedule, including “Marty Supreme,” “Hamnet,” and “Zootopia 2.” (The Hollywood Reporter)

The Wrap

Whatever weather heads our way this weekend, I hope you all stay safe and can either enjoy some snowy time outside or indulge in a cozy weekend cooped up indoors. I imagine I’ll be balancing both.

I’m wishfully manifesting snow rather than ice... but if that’s not the case, Richmond ToolBank’s executive director offered some keen ice-shoveling advice.
