Some restaurant closures hit home. Which shuttered doors have left lingering aches in your hearts? We asked our readers, and received plenty of food for thought. Plus, the floor’s still open for you to share more memories.

Mamma Zu
Over the course of 27 years, locals grew attached to this beloved Italian eatery in Oregon Hill. Owner Ed Vasaio served Tom Hanks, Bruce Springsteen, and likely many of our readers before its pandemic shuttering.

You can still find homages to Mamma Zu today, like this shirt sold by Studio Two Three.

Grace Place
Reader Stacie V. shared this memory of the vegetarian restaurant: “I can still taste the chocolate raspberry cheesecake. I had my last meal there the final night they were open, Dec. 31, 1996, and my favorite waitress, Theresa, gave me a menu to keep.”

Bill’s Barbecue
This local chain of barbecue restaurants closed all of its remaining locations in 2012, leaving Richmonders searching for new spots for limeade and apple pie. The first location opened in the River City in 1930.

Coming Soon

A pizzeria, cafe + jewelry shop combo wasn’t on our 2026 bingo card, but it’s soon to be a reality in Jackson Ward. The couple behind Ginny Benton Jewelry and Rest Pizza plan to team up on a dual storefront next to Gallery5. Stay tuned for a tentative opening at the start of May. (BizSense)

Sports

Virginia’s own Ilia Malinin, the “Quad God,” helped secure a historic figure skating win for Team USA at the 2026 Olympic Games this past weekend. Best believe we were watching. In case you missed it, here’s his gold-worthy performance. At least watch at the fourth-minute mark.

Announced

Rise and shine. Susie’s Delicatessen is trading out its evening schedule for breakfast and lunch. This week will be the restaurant’s last dinner-time hurrah before swapping to daytime hours.

Active

The Forest Hill Spring Classic returns Sunday, April 19, inviting kids ages 2-12 to build bike confidence and celebrate the outdoors. Registration is open for three races ranging from 150 yards to three miles.
