Richmond Black Restaurant Experience (RBRE) is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year with a week of culinary spotlights and community initiatives, happening now through Sunday, March 15.
See what RBRE events are coming up, like a Black Love + Basketball on Friday, March 13, and a Women’s History Month Group Ride on Sunday, March 15
In addition to supporting Richmond’s longstanding Black-owned restaurants, RBRE suggests saving some love for new businesses, like Trevor’s Grill + Tavern, Bolo’s Eatery, and The Benedict on Cary.
The City of Richmond is closed today in observance of International Women’s Day, which occurred yesterday, March 8. Want to learn more about women’s history in Richmond? Click through the Valentine’s virtual timeline, which starts with the regional history of Pocahontas in 1613.
Watch
A new show starring Nicole Kidman has deep Richmond ties — 40+ years in the making. “Scarpetta” is based on a crime novel by former Richmonder Patricia Cornwell. Her inspiration for the show’s lead was born while researching forensic science with one key figure in late-1980s Richmond. (Richmond Magazine + Amazon News)
Special Deal
Support public transit by buying a burrito. On Wednesday, March 11, from 4 to 8 p.m., 25% of Chipotle sales at 7106 Midlothian Tpk. will go toward the city’s public bus system. Read the fundraiser details, and drive over (or ride the 1A or 2B line) later this week.
Arts
March is National Craft Month — the perfect excuse to dive into a creative hobby. Last week, we highlighted trendy needlepoint shops around Richmond, and you can take action at The Sitching Studio’s Open Stitch gathering this Thursday, March 12.
Pets
Why did the chicken cross the road? To become friends with a pack of dogs, apparently. We can’t guarantee your pup will make friends of the poultry variety, but they’ll still have a good time at Richmond’s dog-friendly businesses. (The Guardian)
The Word
Swiftie. The term is officially in the dictionary, defined as “a fan of the music of Taylor Swift.” While Swift isn’t set to perform in Richmond anytime soon, there are plenty of other concert venues bringing big names and local talent to the stage. (USA Today)
March is National Problem Gambling Awareness Month. The Virginia Lottery reminds you to know your limits and play responsibly. If you or someone you know is experiencing a gambling problem, call the Virginia Problem Gambling Helpline at 1‑888‑532‑3500 — free, confidential, and available 24/7. Players must be at least 18.*
