If you have $4.9 million lying around, you could buy an 1896 courthouse and jail in Shockoe Bottom (where the Declaration of Independence was read aloud for the first time). The historic Henrico County building, now on Richmond ground, traces back to a time of different county lines. Take a look inside.

Earlier this week, Richmond City Council voted to transfer ownership of the land Sankofa Community Orchard occupies in Southside Richmond. The bundle of city-owned acres would transfer to Sankofa’s land trust — a community-led initiative to promote food resilience within the region.

“Saved by the Beauty of the World” will make its Richmond debut next week at the 32nd James River Film Festival. The film will also air on PBS American Masters this summer.

AskAnswered

💸 We asked what you wanted to know most about the recently proposed city budget.

After getting a first look at Richmond’s F27 budget, one reader asked, “Will the food tax be increasing?”

The budget does not propose an increase in Richmond’s food taxes. Both the current and proposed rate is 7.5%, on top of the state’s current 6% rate.

The Wrap

As someone who studied poetry in college and grew up in the rural midwest, I’m a forever-and-ever fan of Mary Oliver. I may or may not have already teared up watching the trailer for Sasha Water’s upcoming documentary.

If you’ve yet to experience Oliver’s work, here’s a clip of her reading one of her most celebrated pieces, “Wild Geese.”
