Putting the “Richmond” in Richmond Ren Faire

After a year of trial events and bated anticipation, it’s time for the first-ever Richmond Renaissance Faire this weekend, Saturday, April 18 + Sunday, 19, at Dorey Park. FYI: It’s very sold out.
With over 100 vendors and performers in tow, we got to wondering — just how local will the Ren Faire feel?If it means to transport Richmond to a new realm, will our neighborhood dive bars be there too?
If GWARbar is home-sweet-home to you, you can count on a familiar face, as well as a turkey leg.
Introducing The Guilds
To fortify the spirit of Richmond, organizer Virago Alley created The Founding Guilds — twelve fictionalized categories representing different trades and skills, each with a list of local contributors.
For example, local bicycle co-op Rag & Bones has been knighted into the “Dragon Bones Guild” as a representative of our city’s messengers, engineers, and fixer-uppers. See what complementary demonstrations the crew has in store for the Faire.

Stat
Opening Week at CarMax Park made history with the highest average attendance in all of minor league baseball history… all of minor league baseball history. I had to read that twice myself. The kick-off week averaged 8,235 fans per game. See what other records we hit.
Announced
Allianz Amphitheater revealed two venue changes: The bathrooms now have air conditioning, and the lawn will operate at reduced capacity. Both changes were reportedly made in response to fan feedback — comments like these. (WTVR)
Sports
Will the University of Richmond’s star basketball player make it to the WNBA? A surprise to many, Maggie Doogan was not selected in the 45-player draft earlier this week, which leaves potential contracts up in the air for the time being. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Weather
A spring heatwave is scorching the 90° mark and challenging record temps in Richmond. Most of this week’s record-highs were set in the 1970s, but today’s standing record is an outlier, dating back to 1941. How hot? (WRIC)
Today Is
Tax Day. Whether you got your taxes done early or waited until today, you’ve earned a reward. Treat yourself at one of Richmond’s local ice cream shops. The weather certainly calls for it.
