Have you ever tried a “fruit sando?” Directly inspired by this post from local content creator @noraeatsgood, I didn’t hesitate to accept the quest to try one for myself.

What is a fruit cream sando?

It’s a Japanese dessert sandwich — Furūtsu Sando consisting of white milk bread, whipped cream, vanilla custard, and fruit. The playful treat has become a trendy staple found in Japanese convenience stores like 7-Eleven.

Canopy Bobaluxe opened several months ago, but the sandos are new to the menu.

Where can you find one in Richmond?

Canopy Bobaluxe on Short Pump Road. The shop is next to Tazza Kitchen, about a five-minute drive from the Short Pump shopping mall. The menu offers fruit sandos with strawberries, mangoes, or grapes. I ordered the strawberry one with a brown sugar boba drink — highly recommend.

News Notes

History

“Richmond was the holy grail of the Union war effort.” On this day, April 3, 1865, Union soldiers captured the city of Richmond — a defining moment in the Civil War, prompting the imminent collapse of the Confederacy. Read more about the catalytic event. (HISTORY.com)

Development

A massive Manchester development is in the works — we’re talking seven stories and 300 apartments encompassing a whole city block at the Maury Street roundabout. See for yourself. Depending on developer progress, construction could start in early 2027. No word of a Manchester grocery store yet. (Richmond BizSense)

Feel Good

I know we have some Scrap RVA shoppers in the crowd, myself included. The Northside craft reuse store announced its helped divert 15,000 pounds of art supplies from landfills. Inspired to help the local biz reach 20,000? Here’s how to donate.

Job

Nonprofit Richmond ToolBank is looking for someone handy and organized to join the team as a Program Manager. Brush up on the job description if you want to consider applying or expedite the opportunity to a qualified friend.

Try This

If “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” hitting theaters this week stirs up some gaming nostalgia, lean into it. Rewind Vintage opened a brick-and-mortar in downtown Richmond just a few months ago, and they specialize in all things retro media — no cheat codes necessary.

State

Haribo Sour Easter Grass is the most popular Easter candy in Virginia, according to DoorDash. The study also found that Virginians prefer blue Peeps, and we’re in good company — 16 other states agree.

Health

Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU has always risen to meet the pediatric needs of our community. Three years ago, the hospital opened the Children’s Tower, elevating pediatric care in Richmond. Now, they need your help to expand services again. Donate today and help provide unstoppable care for kids.*

Pro Tip

If you’re a Costco shopper, you’re probably familiar with the ever-popular $1.50 hot dog. But are you in on these other 10 lesser-known hacks all Costco shoppers should know about? Don’t miss the details on vacation deals, members-only movie tickets, and more.*

🚗 How do you feel about the city swapping out bike lane parking citations for warnings this month?

Yesterday, we asked you all to share your opinions on the new bike lane parking protocal. Here’s a first look at the results:

57%: Bring back the citations now.
38%: Let’s try out the warnings.
The rest of the votes were deterred to “I have no opinion either way.”

👟 Under $25: A No. 1 best-seller, these arch support flip-flops feature a yoga foam footbed and just look like vacation.
👟 Under $50: This cushioned footbed sandal is ultra-comfortable, thanks to soft leather, a small platform, and an adjustable web strap (it’s also 50% off).
👟 Under $100: Go for fresh white tennis shoes with Vionic’s court sneaker that’s top-rated by 200+ five-star reviews.
👟 Under $150: Get ready to hear compliments when you wear Clarks’ newly dropped floral wedge, available in black, white, or red.
👟 Under $250: This newly released wedge espadrille from patricia green is worth the splurge, thanks to its chic nautical design and sporty grip sole.
Give me all the shoes

The Wrap

My one takeaway after trying out the fruit sandos at Canopy Bobaluxe: I’m going to have a new attitude next time I run a day’s worth of errands in Short Pump. Actually, two things: I should turn my post notifications on for @noraeatsgood.

Pro tip: If you’re taking one of Canopy’s stacked fruit sandos to-go, bring napkins.
