Don’t ignore the warning signs

The City of Richmond announced a temporary initiative to address illegal parking in designated bike lanes — swapping citations out for fee-free warnings.

The city’s rollout of “friendly reminder” flyers will run throughout April. On May 1, standard $65 citations will tag back in.

Richmond Police posted the initial announcement video to social media yesterday, April 1 — April Fools’ Day. The timing prompted enough prank inquiries from online commenters that we dialed up the city to double-check.

Elise here: I spent about 10 minutes on three separate phone calls with the city to confirm it wasn’t an April Fools’ joke.

News Notes

Quoted

Henrico restaurant Redemption BBQ and Market will host its last day of business this Saturday, April 4. “This is a difficult time for restaurants because it’s a difficult time for consumers,” said owner John Vest, or “Rev. Dr. Porkchop,” to WRIC. Still, it’s not a total goodbye; Vest hopes to continue selling deep-dish pizzas. (WRIC)

Travel

Will Richmond International Airport acquire a nonstop flight to Europe? Its runways adhere to international aircraft standards, and local travel numbers support the demand, so why is the decision on standby for departure? For now, funding. Find out why. (The Richmonder)

Development

A local engineer and landscaper scooped up a historic fixer-upper on the 1900 block of Hull Street. If all goes as planned, the vacant property will become a 15-unit apartment building with a parking lot and amenities area by mid-2027. (Richmond BizSense)

Art

“An immersive, gallery-sized installation that recalls the burning of Richmond in 1865.” That’s what you can expect from the Institute of Contemporary Art’s upcoming exhibit “Deo Vindice (Orion’s Cabinet).” Take a first look. The exhibit will make its way from Los Angeles to Richmond this June.

Civic

Third time’s the charm. City officials are reviewing public feedback and refining the Code Refresh into a third draft, which will be released soon. In the meantime, you can join the conversation (in person or virtually) at the next Zoning Advisory Council Meeting on Wednesday, April 8.

Passover, or “Pesach,” began at sundown yesterday, April 1. Typically lasting eight-days, the Jewish holiday begins with ceremonial dinners, or “Passover Seders.” If you’re looking for somewhere to honor the tradition, you can count on Susie’s Delicatessen for matzo ball soup, a classic Passover Seder dish.
