You don’t have to be a self-appointed “film buff” to enjoy the Richmond International Film Festival (RIFF). This annual event welcomes anyone who appreciates the art of film and the exploration of new perspectives. Plus, it’ll make you look cool on Letterboxd.

RIFF returns to the River City for its 14th year from Tuesday, Sept. 23, through Sunday, Sept. 28. This year’s festival includes 170+ films from over 25 countries, along with a lineup of musical acts.

Find screenings + events

Most screenings will take place at the Byrd Theatre and Bowtie Cinemas, but be sure to check individual event details.

If you’re unsure where to start, you can use the Film Guide to filter showings by interest, whether it’s international films, music videos, animated shorts, or specific genres, such as comedies or thrillers.

The festival also hosts a variety of celebrations and showcases, including an opening night VIP reception at New York Deli, a mixer at Vagabond, plus several discussion panels and an after-party at Révéler.

Visit the 2025 program schedule for the full festival layout, which also offers a catalog of virtual options.

Reserve tickets

Tickets are available now for bundled passes, VIP badges, and single film screenings.

Pro tip: If you’re buying a pass, make sure to acquire that first; then you’ll be able to reserve spots at events throughout the week.

Editor’s budget-friendly pick:

Browse the film guide for your top pick, and grab a $15 single-show ticket. Up the elegance (but not the price) for another $15 seat at the Red Carpet Awards Ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 28.

The red carpet dress code is upscale casual to black tie — an opportune excuse for a spontaneous thrifting mission.
