Back-to-school shopping can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be.

Your local Goodwill is the perfect place to find affordable clothes and supplies — plus, with Virginia’s Tax-Free Weekend coming up Friday, Aug.1-Sunday, Aug. 3, you can save even more on already low prices.

We recently visited Goodwill at Stratford Hills (7101A Forest Hill Ave.) and found every back-to-school essential you can imagine. Think: brand-name jeans, fun graphic tees, backpacks, purses, colored pencils, calculators, and even whiteboards for teachers.

Goodwill refreshes its selection each week, adding thousands of new items every day. Read: It’s not a bad idea to scan the shelves with other savvy shoppers multiple times a week. You never know what gems you’ll find.

Pro tip: Don’t miss $1 Mondays — that’s when select items from the previous week’s Color of the Week are just $1 for one day only.

Things to know if you go:

Happy thrifting
