Look out for nightly traffic delays in December if you’re traveling on East Broad Street over I-95.
Construction crews will start work at the beginning of the month replacing a section of the bridge over the highway — only one eastbound and one westbound lane will be open. Pedestrians and bikes will have limited access to the bridge during the work and should use the northern sidewalk.
To avoid the area entirely, use Main Street.
The construction is part of VDOT’s work to rehabilitate five bridges over I-95 in Richmond at 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, and East Broad Streets. Crews will eventually replace the superstructure of the East Broad Street bridge, which should extend its life cycle and raise its vertical clearance.
After work on Broad Street is complete, crews will shift work to I-95, resulting in some nightly lane closures on the highway starting in early 2024.
The process to rehab the five bridges began in 2020.
