May is National Bicycle Safety Month — aka, the perfect time to remind all drivers and cyclists to stay alert on the roads.

Did you know? Richmond is committed to Vision Zero, a global initiative aimed at eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries. So far this year, Richmond has seen five crashes and seven injuries involving bikes, according to Vision Zero. The good news: Most of these crashes can be avoided by paying more attention to your habits.

Here are some tips for both drivers and cyclists to keep in mind:

For drivers

  • Never drink and drive.
  • Obey posted speed limits.
  • Avoid distractions, like using your phone, while driving.
  • Slow down and give bikers plenty of room.

For cyclists

  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Obey traffic signals and signs.
  • Wear bright or reflective gear to stay visible.
