As the saying goes, there’s someone out there for everyone. We happen to feel the same way about public libraries. They listen to your requests, support your niche interests, and always give you quiet time when you need it.
If you don’t consider yourself a regular public library patron, maybe you just haven’t found the right match yet. Luckily, there are dozens of public libraries in and around Richmond, each with its own personality, atmosphere, and unique traits.
We’re here to play matchmaker. Start the timer...
Your first speed dating match: Varina Area Library in Henrico County (~15 minutes east of downtown Richmond).
Three words to describe:
- Serene
- Woodsy
- Bright
A little background:
This 43,000-sqft library replaced the original branch in 2016. Rural-inspired design elements “are reminiscent of the agrarian structures that once populated the area, borrowing on the form of a tobacco barn.”
Special characteristics:
Night owl | Henrico County libraries are typically open until 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, but this rural retreat feels especially cozy in the evening hours.
Nature-lover | Follow the surrounding scenery along a walking route that connects to the Virginia Capital Trail.
Appreciates quiet time | If you need to zone in and tune out, there’s a dedicated Silent Study Room with floor-to-ceiling windows (no reservation needed).
Award-winner | Accolades don’t determine worth, but this branch’s collection of design and sustainability awards is certainly worth mentioning.
You’d make a great match if you like:
- Rainy days
- Clean, minimalist spaces
- Discussing Frank Lloyd Wright architecture
- Nature walks or bike rides
- Scenic drives outside of the city
