Gas prices vs. local food and drink deals

As gas prices spike, which Richmond businesses offer deals when it comes time to treat yourself?

Gas prices have surged past the $4 mark in Richmond and elsewhere nationally. According to AAA, Richmond’s average retail price reached $4.19 as of Tuesday, April 7.

With that in mind, we set out to find local deals that cost less than the average gallon of gas right now. Whether you find joy in the occasional patio drink, the camaraderie of a hot dog night, or an enchanted stroll with a Saran-Wrapped package of deviled eggs, you deserve to treat yourself (while saving some change along the way).

Food

For a quick pick-me-up, you can add a $3.50 pupusa from El Pope to your lunchtime plan, available both with or without meat.

Take your pick, and bag a ~$2 donut from Country Style, which operates two stores in both the east and west end.

Lombardy Market in the Fan supplies Richmonders with ~$2 deviled eggs and ~$3.50 slices of cake or pie.

City Dogs dishes out $2 RVA Dog every Tuesday. Luck will have it, the standard $3.99 dawgs make the cut too.

To elevate your savings, indulge in a lineup of $1 oysters during Lillian’s happy hour, daily from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Go classic with a $3.50 slice of cheese pizza at Mary Angela’s in Carytown.

Head to Oak & Apple in Shockoe Bottom for $1 wings or $2 pork or chicken sliders during weekday happy hours from 3 to 6 p.m.

Drinks

Reader Rebekah F. recommends Garnett’s for $3 wine and pints during happy hour, daily from 4 to 6 p.m.

Great for a breezy day, sit back with a $2.99 cafe con leche at Kahlo’s Taqueria + Bar. On a hot day, you can pay the same price for an American soda, and you’ll get free refills.

Fighting Fish pours $1 sake shots during happy hour, daily from 5 to 6 p.m.

When a sunny day calls out to you, follow its voice to Kuba Kuba for fresh-squeezed $3.50 limeade, and you might as well take it with you to the park across the street.
