A new race is coming to Richmond next March. Yesterday, representatives from Sports Backers and the University of Richmond announced the Virginia Credit Union River City Half and River City 5K.

The two races are set for Saturday, March 9, 2024. Pro runner and former American women’s marathon record holder Keira D’Amato said the timing was ideal to fill a gap in the training schedules of many racers.

Sports Backers Executive Director Jon Lugbill emphasized the scale of the River City Half as a way to show off city pride and build momentum for active living across the region.

Each River City race will start and finish on UR’s campus. The half marathon will loop runners on a scenic journey along the James River, across the Huguenot Bridge, around Pony Pasture, across the Nickel Bridge, through the Windsor Farms neighborhood, and back to UR’s Westhampton Lake.

5K participants will run along River Road, out and back on the Huguenot Bridge, and back to the lake.

At the announcement, D’Amato also teased future surprises for the race weekend. Look our for those to be revealed in the coming days.

Already excited? Registration is open. All participants will recieve a finisher medal and technical event shirt provided by PR Run & Walk.

Mayor Levar Stoney introduced two ordinances at a City Council Budget Work Session on Wednesday which would facilitate the city’s purchase of Mayo Island.

The plan to buy the historic island and transform it into a green space and recreational area has been in the works for a while. Ordinance No. 2023-123 specifies that the city intends to make the purchase by matching funds from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

There will be a public hearing on Monday, April 24 at City Council’s 6 p.m. meeting time to discuss the proposal.

We want to know: What do you want to see on the future Mayo Island? Are you imagining it as a relaxing park, an outdoor concert venue, or a farmers market space? Let us know by clicking the button below and you could be mentioned in a future newsletter.

If the Mayo Island purchase is approved, I’ll be eager to see what comes of the space. I think the connectivity between Shockoe and Manchester is really promising.
