RVA Bike Share to relaunch August 21 with free rides

Less than a month after a new software provider was announced, the city has relaunched RVA Bike Share. Starting today, Richmonders can borrow a bike from 26 different stations around the city. The program will also be free through the end of the year.

The micromobility program originally launched in 2017. It suspended service in May when the previous contractor, Bewegen Technologies, abruptly shut down. The city signed a one-year deal this summer with WeGoShare as a technological partner. Operations and maintenance will be managed by a company called Evolve Mobility.

Today’s relaunch also includes a new station opening at Dominion Energy Center. In its press release, the Dept. of Public Works teased more station openings before the end of the year.

Want to get riding? All registered users will be able to ride for free through Sunday, Dec. 31. Download the RVA Bike Share app to get set up.

When we asked readers about a prospective return of a bike share program, 51% said they were somewhat or very interested in a relaunch. 47% said they would definitely use it or were likely to try it out. If you get out on two wheels, let us know how it goes.

News Notes
Development
  • Henrico’s GreenCity development has added another partner and secured another 110 acres. Markel|Eagle Partners LLC will develop the residential portion of the eco-district, which will include an 80-acre park.
Biz
  • California-based brewery Stone Brewing is growing its Richmond operations. The company is putting $40 million into expanding the production capacity of its East End facility and is reportedly doubling its local staff. (Richmond BizSense)
Outdoors
  • Several improvements are coming to the tennis courts at Fonticello Park. Richmond Parks and Recreation has secured a contractor to remove the training court, add green space, resurface the remaining courts — with lines for tennis and pickleball — and redesign the fence.
Festival
Plan Ahead
  • Mark your calendar for the Virginia Czech and Slovak Folklife Festival on Saturday, Oct. 21. The free, family-friendly fest will bring music, dance, crafts, art exhibits, and foods including cabbage rolls, kielbasa, and sweets to the Prince George County Regional Heritage Center.
Gallery
  • A giraffe was born at the Metro Richmond Zoo, the first in nearly four years. You can see pictures of the calf on the zoo’s Instagram. He may not have a name yet, but at under 20 days old he’s already over six feet tall and walking around.
Finance
  • Refinance rates are skyrocketing. But home equity rates remain relatively low — which means that now is a great time to borrow against your home. Calculate your payment.*

The space isn’t open yet, but it now has a fresh look courtesy of Sure Hand Signs. RVA Community Fridges and Richmond Food Not Bombs have been working to finish the interior of the building, add walk-in fridges, and complete a kitchen.

You can support the effort by donating or volunteering your time. Pro tip: Keep up with RVA Community Fridges on Instagram to get more volunteering information as opening day nears.

I’ll be interested to see how the Iron Blossom Music Festival goes at the former Washington training camp — since the future of the site is still up in the air.
