Richmond’s array of fall festivals, crisp afternoons spent in pumpkin patches, and seasonal fun is sure to get you excited for the months to come.

🍂 Festivals

Richmond Folk Festival | Friday, Oct. 13-Sunday, Oct. 15 | Times vary | Brown’s Island, Riverfront | Free entry | One of Richmond’s favorite festivals returns with three days of performances, craft vendors, food, and drinks.

Pumpkin Festival | Saturday, Oct. 21 | 12-6 p.m. | Bon Secours Training Center, Scott’s Addition | Free entry | Bands, food, vendors, and a costume contest are all on the agenda for this festival.

HarvestFest | Saturday, Oct. 28 | 10 a.m.-8 p.m. | Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden | $0-17 | Celebrate all of fall with performances by the Latin Ballet of Virginia, Kadencia, and DJ Ray.

🌱 Pumpkin patches

Ashland Berry Farm, Ashland
There’s something for everyone at this Hanover haunt with all-you-can-carry pumpkin picking and four spooky experiences as part of Terror on the Farm.

Chesterfield Berry Farm, Moseley
The fall festival continues on weekends through the end of the month with an alien invasion-themed corn maze, pumpkin patch, and a shelled corn play area. Admission starts at $15 per person.

Hanover Vegetable Farm, Ashland
Take part in weekday hayrides or head out on the weekend to get pumpkins, walk the corn maze, bounce on the giant pumpkin jump pad, and shoot corn cannons. Tickets are $8 — or $15 with a pumpkin included.

Halloween Haunt at Kings Dominion, Doswell

Opening
  • Gold Lion Community Cafe is set to open its doors tomorrow at 8 a.m. The Manchester cafe will offer a variety of drinks including coffee, chai, and smoothies, as well as vegetarian breakfast and lunch options.
Community
  • The expansion of Southside Community Center is underway. City officials broke ground on the project on Tuesday. When complete, it will include a gym with a walking track, an indoor playground, a boxing facility, a teaching kitchen, and sound and video studios.
Arts
  • There’s a new mural courtesy of local artist The Night Owl at the corner of Cary Street and Belmont Avenue. Check out this time-lapse video of the artist’s creation.
Drink
  • Stony Point Fashion Park will have a new open-container policy starting Monday, Oct. 9. The mall was approved by the state for a commercial lifestyle center license, which will allow Stony Point establishments to sell to-go alcoholic beverages for customers to enjoy while walking around the mall. Number
  • $1 million. That’s how much Richmond International Airport will receive as part of a federal grant to build up service to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. RIC’s first move will be to provide nonstop service to Seattle. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

  • RVA Fashion Week is underway. Tonight is the debut show for Sherry Nguyen’s innovative preppy brand, Urban Academy. Other events include a cultural art experience, creative suite, and the finale runway show. (Style Weekly)

  • If you get your groceries at the Kroger on Laburnum, you may notice some recent improvements. The store just finished its remodel, which included updating the floral, produce, cheese, and adult beverage sections. The pickup area has also been expanded.
Film
  • Try your hand at filmmaking by submitting to the 60 Second Short Film Festival. Entries are due Jan. 1 and there are four categories: live action, documentary, animation, or environmental. The local festival, put on by Richmond Parks and Recreation, receives film submissions from around the world.

River City Roller Derby tournament returns for three days of action

Three days. Eight teams. One champion. The People’s Battle of Richmond rolls into the Greater Richmond Convention Center this Friday, Oct. 25 and continues with adrenaline-pumping action all weekend.

Hosted by River City Roller Derby, the contest will feature teams from Florida, South Carolina, Indiana, and around Virginia.

You can witness all the action by getting one, two, or three-day tickets — buy in advance to save on admission. The event will also include a raffle, vendors, and concessions.
