We know the question on your mind, Richmonders — is it going to snow this winter? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for December, January, and February.
While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what winter will bring.
Reminder: The first official day of winter is Saturday, Dec. 21.

Think warm. This winter, Richmond has a 40-50% chance of temperatures being higher than normal.
🌨️ Precipitation
Expect normal amounts of precipitation.The Greater Richmond Region is in the “equal chances” zone, meaning we shouldn’t expect way more or way less rain and snowfall compared to previous years.
Most of Virginia has an equal chance of having above or below average precipitation this winter.

December
December temperatures in Richmond tend to fluctuate between 35.1° and 49.1°. Since it might be a little warmer than normal, don’t hold out for a snowy holiday season. The days will also be shorter, so get out in the sun if you can.
January
Expect it to be a bit more frigid in January. Historically the coldest month of the year, temperatures average between a low of 29.7° and a high of 44.6°. If we see significant snow this winter, it’ll likely be in January.
February
In February, temperatures generally stay around a low of 31.8° and a high of 49.3°. If you’ve already got your sun lamp out, you might be reassured to hear that by the end of February, the sun won’t set until 6 p.m. It’s the little things.

Heads up: Since city offices will be closed for Thanksgiving, there will be no residential trash collection on Thursday, Nov. 23. Scheduled Thursday pickups will shift to Friday instead.
Traffic
Watch out for slower traffic and lane closures south of the river in the 5th District for the next month. DPW is paving several streets, including sections of Bainbridge, Midlothian Turnpike, and Broad Rock Road.
Civic
The Planning Commission has adopted the Shockoe Small Area Plan, a document designed to guide the development of the neighborhood. The plan has been in the works for several years, but the city has gotten a head start on some of the projects within it. (Richmond BizSense)

Henrico is celebrating the opening of its Sports & Events Center with a ribbon cutting event featuring games, music, and giveaways at the new facility on Monday, Dec. 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It’s free and open to the public.
Shop
Sip & Shop returns to Stony Point Fashion Park this weekend for Black Friday shopping. Find 50 local makers — plus food, desserts, and drinks — right next to the ice rink. The market takes place each Saturday and Sunday through Christmas Eve; admission is free.
