8 record stores in Richmond

Unplug the aux cord and dust off your relative’s old record player — we’ve rounded up eight River City record stores totally in tune with your impeccable taste.

Deep Groove Records, 317 N. Robinson St.
This Fan shop celebrated 16 years of business earlier this month. We love their selection of used jazz and blues records.

Pro tip: Deep Groove buys secondhand records seven days a week and can even arrange house calls if needed.

Plan 9 Music, 3017 W. Cary St.
If you haven’t had a chance to peruse the aisles of this Carytown favorite, be warned — it’s easy to accidentally idle away a whole day crate-digging.

Bonus: Plan 9 is right amid Carytown’s commercial strip, so you can easily make it a whole small-biz shopping day.

Vinyl Conflict, 300 E. Grace St.
This dedicated hardcore, punk, and metal record store moved downtown from Oregon Hill in 2022.

Pro tip: Vinyl Conflict is sharing its space with Homme Essentials until the retailer’s new location opens, so you can peruse menswear and modern home goods while you’re there.

Records & Relics is an unassuming gem in the Church Hill neighborhood. | Photo by RICtoday

Records & Relics RVA, 2704 E. Marshall St.
Dig through local LPs, flip through a few music books, and browse an extensive collection of posters, stickers, CDs, and more at this Church Hill store.

Bonus: Head across the street for lunch at Cobra Burger to recharge after searching the bins.

Wax Moon, 1310 Altamont Ave.
This Scott’s Addition vinyl and video store houses all genres but emphasizes the spooky and scary — hence the horror-themed pinball arcade.

Editor Elise: My perfect day in this part of Scott’s Addition involves hitting Wax Moon to browse records, then walking to Dawnstar for used video games, Two Rabbits for vintage finds, and Moore Street Café for fuel.
RIC small friend

Small Friend Records & Books offers new and gently used vinyl. | Photo by RICtoday

Small Friend Records & Books, 1 N. Lombardy St.
Head to this Fan shop for new and gently-used records and books. Analog lovers can even pick up some cassettes.

Pro tip: Bring your pre-loved records and books for cash or store credit Wednesday through Sunday, 12-4 p.m.

Virginia’s Memory Lane Records, 8609 Sanford Dr.
This massive Henrico vinyl hub has records, CDs, cassettes, stereo equipment, VHS tapes, posters, DVDs, and more.

Fun fact: Memory Lane has been a part of the Richmond record and music scene for over 40 years.

Crossroads Records, 9200 Stony Point Pkwy, STE 191
Browse from vinyl bins to t-shirts to audio equipment + turntables at this shop-all stop in Stony Point Fashion Park.

Bonus: You can also search through gifts like jewelry, home decor, collectibles, and more.

We know we missed a few rockin’ River City record stores. Let us know your favorite place to score sweet tunes.

And if you’re lacking a turntable in your life, snag a five-star reviewed record player. The H004 Hi-Fi Turntable Stereo Set is perfect for treating your vinyl right with a proper hi-fi system and the H005 Bluetooth Turntable lets you listen to your records with bluetooth headphones.

Prices range depending on your stay and accessibility to amenities. At both parks, electric and water hookups are $37 for Virginia residents. Buddy + group camping fees are also available. You can also find individual park pricing for yurts and cabins.

From the editor
I’ve been collecting records since I was 14 years old, and as a high schooler I blew plenty of my $9/hour summer paychecks at Plan 9. These days I’ve been spending more time at Deep Groove — I picked up John Coltrane’s “Ole” there just this Monday.
