  • Get ready to cheer on the Squirrels at CarMax Park. The Goochland-based used car retailer bought the naming rights for the stadium. Ground was broken yesterday with a projected April 2026 open date.
Plan Ahead
  • Advance tickets are on sale now for the State Fair of Virginia. The fair will kick off in Doswell on Friday, Sept. 27 and run through Sunday, Oct. 6 — tickets start at $10.50.
Film
  • “Atlantis,” the coming-of-age musical inspired by the life of Pharrell Williams and filmed in Richmond, has a release date. You’ll be able to see River City locations on the big screen when it opens on May 9, 2025. (Deadline)

Lace up your hiking boots, because we’ve compiled a hiking guide for the Richmond area with 15+ routes and trails to help you plan your next adventure.

Belle Isle
  • Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
  • Length: 3 miles
  • Wheelchair accessible: Partially — ramps and bridge are paved, main loop is compact dirt
  • Pet-friendly: Yes, leash required
Cross the bridge and follow the path around this historic island. As you head towards the top of the island, the trails will get more difficult.

Pro tip: Belle Isle is popular for a reason — but that can make parking difficult. If you can, bike, walk, or take GRTC Route 87 and get off on 2nd Street at Brown’s Island Way or Spring Street.

Buttermilk Trail
  • Difficulty: Difficult
  • Length: 2.5 miles
  • Wheelchair accessible: No
  • Pet-friendly: Yes, leash required
Choose from three trails with tight, twisty descents, steep climbs, creek crossings, and bridges.

Senior City Editor Robin here: My favorite part of the Buttermilk Trail — besides the beautiful nature — is explaining its history to newcomers. Yes, there’s actual buttermilk involved.
