Whether you’re looking to learn something new about the River City or plotting a way to spend your Saturday afternoon, here are 30+ museums to visit. Just be sure to check hours while planning your trip.

History


Virginia Museum of History and Culture
Museum District | $5-10 | Memberships available

With a collection of over 9 million items, there’s a lot of history to take in at the VMHC. Plus, they have a full calendar of events, visiting exhibitions, and a cafe to grab a quick bite or coffee after perusing the galleries.

The Valentine
Capitol District | $8-10 | Memberships available

Richmond’s history museum documents 400 years of the city’s past and includes the 1812 Wickham House, a National Historic Landmark.

Fun fact: The Valentine was the first private museum in the city when it opened in 1898.

Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia
Jackson Ward | $6-10 | Memberships available

Founded in 1981, this museum takes visitors through Black history in Virginia with exhibits and special events.

Don’t miss: “A Prescription for Change” highlights the history of Virginia’s Black medical professionals.

The Science Museum has something for curious minds of all ages, from traveling exhibits to live science demonstrations and films at The Dome.

  • Local chef Laine Myers is opening her pop-up and retail concept Oro as a restaurant in Union Hill. She plans to welcome diners by the end of the year. The Italian menu will feature a variety of veggies and seasonal dishes. (Richmond Magazine)

  • A new place to find Virginia-made goods has opened in Scott’s Addition. It’s the first Richmond location for Northern VA-based Shop Made in Virginia. Know a local artisan? The store has a rolling application to become a featured maker.
Sports
  • A Saturday night victory over Chattanooga allowed the Kickers to clinch the final spot in the USL League One playoffs. It’ll be the team’s third postseason appearance in the last four seasons. Up the Roos at their last regular season game this Saturday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m.
Civic
  • City Council passed an ordinance last week that should increase construction worker pay on city-funded projects. Contractors and sub-contractors will now be required to pay laborers a prevailing wage on projects valued at over $250,000. (VPM)
Closed
  • Dancing Kilt Brewery in Chester closed its doors over the weekend. It opened in 2020 and remodeled last year to build up its food offerings. The owners said they have no current plans to start another business. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Traffic
  • The Dept. of Public Works will be resurfacing several streets in the Hickory Hill area starting today. Watch out for lane closures and slower moving traffic on these roads. (South Richmond News)

  • Find new (old) clothes and accessories at Halcyon Vintage’s fall rummage sale this weekend. Stop by the Fan shop from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 and 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27. Very into vintage? Check out our local thrifting guide.
Edu
  • Students at Armstrong High School hosted a first-of-its-kind mayoral forum last week where candidates answered questions generated by the school’s AP Government class. The event was moderated by two students, Renecia Allen and Zion Lundy, and hosted by student emcee Ty’Asia Tolson-Wilkerson. (The Richmonder)

Three days. Eight teams. One champion. The People’s Battle of Richmond rolls into the Greater Richmond Convention Center this Friday, Oct. 25 and continues with adrenaline-pumping action all weekend.

Hosted by River City Roller Derby, the contest will feature teams from Florida, South Carolina, Indiana, and around Virginia.

You can witness all the action by getting one, two, or three-day tickets — buy in advance to save on admission. The event will also include a raffle, vendors, and concessions.
