👻 A very River City Halloween

A triptych of Lucy Dacus, Ripple the Otter, and Nutzy.

Halloween is fast approaching. Here are some fa-boo-lous ideas for how to win the costume contest and embrace your River City pride with a Richmond-inspired ‘fit.

Ripple the Otter

Dress up as the Richmond Public Library mascot by picking up a plain red t-shirt and adding the RPL logo to the front by printing it out and attaching it (beginner) or using fabric paint (expert). Sport an otter mask or splurge on a fuzzy onesie. From there, all you need is your favorite book as a prop.

The Ghost of the Broad Street Arby’s Hat

This Richmond spin on a classic costume requires a bed sheet and a ten-gallon hat. Make yourself a Charlie Brown-esque ghost costume, then throw your tallest hat on top in honor of the iconic Arby’s sign, gone but not forgotten.

MF BROOM

The city’s favorite bike lane sweeper can be your costume with just a gladiator mask and broom prop. The name was chosen by the people, so its bound to be popular at parties.

Lucy Dacus

If you’ve got a nine to five, maybe you haven’t had time to think of a costume yet. Assemble an indie-rocker-on-the-rise look with items you might already have in your closet. A denim button down and red lip is a good riff on her Spotify headshot. Pro tip: Add a guitar if you’ve got one.

One-Way Street

Ready to stress out your friends this Halloween? All you need is a piece of poster board and a black marker. Draw up your version of the traffic sign and hit the road. Looking for a couples costume? Have a partner dress as a vehicle going the wrong way.

1 million LEGO bricks have landed in Richmond

Presented by Virginia Museum of History & Culture

From land and sea to air and space, the new exhibition at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture brings the history of transportation to life — with more than 1 million LEGO bricks. Think: Gigantic ships, planes, and trains.

We recently visited “Traveling Bricks: An Exhibition Made of LEGO® Bricks,” on display now through Sunday, Jan. 5, to get a first look at the 100+ models of iconic vehicles. Our favorite? The 200,000-piece, 551-pound replica of the Titanic, complete with Jack and Rose. Psst... It’s the exhibition’s largest model.

In addition to the impressive displays, there’s an interactive area where guests can build their own LEGO creations and add them to the exhibition. With 200,000 bricks to choose from, there are plenty of pieces to go around.

Bonus: Catch free LEGO movie screenings — and free after-hours museum admission — during the next three First Fridays (Nov. 1, Dec. 6 + Jan. 3).

🚌 Greyhound delays its departure

RIC greyhound station
Greyhound, now on Arthur Ashe Boulevard, is trying to find a new long-term home at Main Street Station. | Photo by RICtoday
Greyhound will not be leaving its station on Arthur Ashe Boulevard as soon as anticipated, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The bus line company had been planning to leave the station sometime this month. With plans now in the works to move near Main Street Station, the company has delayed that departure. It now plans to move some time in the next few months.

Greyhound has been operating out of the Arthur Ashe station since 1984. Once the space is vacated, the property’s owner plans to demolish it and replace it with a multi-family residential building.

If Greyhound and the city reach an agreement for long-term use of the space outside Main Street Station, the company could pay the city around $15,000 annually. Other bus lines including Megabus and Virginia Breeze already use the Main Street Station stop.

If the Tom Leonard’s animatronic dog band is also looking to grow, consider this my formal application. I’d gladly play guitar in exchange for a free Christmas tree.
