Did you know? Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, Jan. 20) is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer.

For 30 years, the MLK Day of Service has grown as more people embrace the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving the communities where we live, work, and play.

Help your community while honoring the legacy of Dr. King by exploring local volunteer opportunities.

News Notes

Civic

Richmond is under a water boil advisory until further notice due to outages caused by winter storms. This means residents should avoid using running water if possible. If water must be used, residents should boil it before any usage. (WRIC)

Weather

Sleet, icy patches, and snowdrifts may remain and create hazardous driving conditions throughout Richmond, says VDOT. The local organization is working to remove the snow and recommends using the 511 hotline for updated road information.
And the winner is... Poppy. That’s the name that was officially selected by the Richmond Zoo for its newest pygmy hippo. The zoo reported 116,731 total votes, with 52.8% for “Poppy” and 47.2% for “Hammie Mae.”

Development

Superstars Pizza, a locally owned pizzeria, is eyeing a new location at 3401 Patterson Ave. The owners said they are looking into this building thanks to the great success the catering business has experienced, forcing them to expand to meet demands. (Richmond Biz Sense)

Sports

The University of Richmond’s women’s basketball team defeated UMass in Amherst for the first time in seven seasons. The Spiders trounced the Minutewomen, 82-52, and shot a scorching 51% from three-point land. They’ll be back at Robins Center to host George Mason on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.

Happy Tuesday, Richmond. I spent my Monday snowed in, so this newsletter is powered by homemade coffee, fuzzy socks, an oversized sweater, and a dash of cabin fever.
