The last bell will ring soon, signaling the start of summer. If you want to keep the gears turning, sign the kiddos up for one of these eight Richmond-area camps. Pro tip: Registrations can fill up quickly, so make sure to sign up as soon as possible.
For the athlete
Core Kids Academy Gymnastics Camp | June-August | $50+
There are sessions for kids ages 3-12, appropriate for complete beginners looking to learn the ropes, or for more experienced gymnasts to flex their muscles.
For the artsy kid
Virginia Rep’s Theater Camp | June-August | $350+
To be, or not to be among fellow young thespians at a one- or two-week theater camp, that is the question. The answer should be yes if you want your K-12 kid to unleash their theatrical side, guided by seasoned theater teachers.

SOAR365 | June-July | $900+
Longtime Virginia nonprofit SOAR365 hosts experiences for children with disabilities, where “fireflies, roasted marshmallows, swimming, arts and craft” await, per the camp website.

This event is part of the “Road to the Kentucky Derby,” and the winning horse will snag a coveted spot at the 151st Kentucky Derby — making it one for the history books.
Guests can look forward to an action-packed day of thoroughbred racing, highlighted by the Virginia Derby and Virginia Oaks. Plus, enjoy performances by a military color guard and live music to keep the excitement going.
Want to join in the fun? General admission is just $5 and includes a limited-edition collector’s item. Additional upgrades include indoor seating, trackside dining packages, and exclusive experiences at the Colonial Downs Jockey Club.
Gates open at 10:30 a.m., so put on your best Derby-day outfit, grab a drink, and check out the competition before the races kick off at 12 p.m.
Mayor Danny Avula says the city has invested “just under $5 million un equipment repair and upgrades” to the water treatment plant. At a City Council meeting earlier this week, Avula said upgrades include backup batteries to avoid a repeat of January’s crisis. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Speaking of the City Council, members just approved a special use permit to build a 352-unit apartment complex in Richmond’s Northside. Apartments at Rady Flats would be open to those earning up to 60 percent of local median income. There’s no timeline yet, but when we know, you’ll know. (Richmond Biz Sense)
Outdoors
Get ready for a new riverside park in Chesterfield. The county, along with a local environmental nonprofit, acquired 42 acres of property along the Appomattox River with the intention to establish a new scene for recreation and outdoor escape. Fun fact: The property features 16 islands. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
Closing
Joann Inc. — a generational go-to for crafters — is closing all remaining stores after several failed last-resort efforts to navigate bankruptcy. Richmond closures include 7504 W. Broad St. in Henrico and 125 Perimeter Dr. in Chesterfield. As stores wind down toward official closure, Joann is offering final sales both in-person and online. (Richmond Biz Sense)

Another day, another concert announcement.Simple Plan are bringing their nostalgic pop-punk tunes to the highly anticipated Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront on Tuesday, Aug. 26 as part of the Virginia Credit Union Concert Series. Pre-sale tickets go on sale today.

More than $500,000. That’s how much the Virginia Museum of History and Culture just granted to 11 societies, organizations, institutions, and communities across the commonwealth. Several Indigenous groups are among the recipients, including the Virginia Tribal Education Consortium, Monacan National Cultural Foundation, and Pamunkey Indian Tribe. (WRIC)
