A photo of tres leches cake with strawberries on it. The cake is on a pink plate in the sunlight with a hand underneath it. Strawberry syrup or coulis is pouring down the side of the slice.

It’s not the best-kept foodie secret anymore, but TBT El Gallo is still killing the game in the Fan District. The spot describes its cuisine as “Elevated Mexican Street Food. Authentic, respectful of tradition, but not bound by it.”

I think about the loaded burrito at least once a day, and that strawberry tres leches cake... no words.

News Notes

Biz

Five businesses headquartered in Richmond made this year’s Fortune 500 list. Performance Food came in at No. 80 and CarMax made No. 151 on this ranking of the biggest US companies by revenue. Ka-ching.
In case you missed it, Taylor Swift bought back the rights to all of her music. If you’re looking to celebrate, there’s a Taylor Swift Music Tribute taking over Uptown Alley on Sunday, July 6.

Drink

What’s your favorite beer? If it’s Coors, you’re not alone. Data shows that it’s the most popular beer in Virginia. (Visual Capitalist)

Mansion Monday

Newly renovated and perfectly located in Richmond’s iconic Windsor Farms neighborhood, this new listing is sure to catch a few eyes. Four bedrooms and four bathrooms are accompanied by thoughtful touches in every corner. Did we mention the saltwater pool? It looks like it was plucked straight from the French Riviera.

Travel

Sorry, your Costco membership won’t get you past TSA. You’ll have to get your REAL ID like the rest of us. But pick us up a rotisserie chicken if you’re already making a Costco run. (WHAS11)

Civic

Attention all drivers: When scanning the road for a gap in traffic, take an extra second to look for motorcyclists. Riders, wear all your protective gear and make sure you stay visible. Looking twice could save a life.*

City Guide

Let’s hop in the DeLorean

The photo shows the facade of Old City Hall, a gothic-style building with angular roofs, points, and dozens of arches windows.

Richmond has 200+ locations, buildings, and districts included on the National Register for Historic Places, many chosen for their significant architectural feats.

Here’s 10 examples you might pass every day:

Central National Bank | Built in 1929 | Registered in 1979
This 23-story Art Deco skyscraper closed as a bank back in 2000. In honor of its late-1920s style, it’s now known as Deco at CNB Apartments.

John B. Cary School | Built in 1912-1913 | Registered in 1992
The former school has kept most of its Gothic Revival facade, designed by VA architect Charles M. Robinson. He also designed seven buildings at UR, including Richmond Hall + Cannon Memorial Chapel.

New Pump-House | Built in 1881 | Registered in 2002
Our favorite Gothic Revival vampire house. Built by city engineer Col. Wilfred Emory Cutshaw, this building operated until 1924. We did plenty of research on this Richmond staple so you can dive into the details.
