Yesterday, we asked our readers to build their perfect matcha latte, courtesy of Sefton Coffee’s flavorful menu. We were curious to ask the same question of the staff at Sefton, so we called the owner, Jennie Skinner.

Here are the results:

Our readers’ most common answer:

Iced matcha latte with cinnamon vanilla syrup + oat milk (no added espresso).

Sefton’s staff pick:

The exact same thing, down to the details.

Don’t believe me? Stop by and ask for yourself, and order a dang latte while you’re there.

News Notes

Announcment

A piece of Richmond history is heading to Hollywood. Pulled from its pedestal during protests in 2020, a graffiti-covered Jefferson Davis statue ships out to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles on Sunday, Aug. 17. The former monument, now owned by The Valentine, will join MOCA’s upcoming exhibit. (Style Weekly)

Asked

Following our previous note, this quick survey invites you to share your thoughts on the removal and repurposing of monuments in Richmond. First organized in 2022, this survey will close on Monday, Aug. 18. Editor Elise: I timed myself for reference, and it took me approximately three minutes to complete.

Outdoors

A woodsy six-acre plot on Patterson Avenue is slated to become a new public park. The property has sat in limbo for years; Now, it’s being preserved as a “pocket park.” This Henrico County announcement closely follows the development proposals for Tuckahoe Creek Park. (Richmond BizSense)

Try This

James River Cellars’ Fridays at the Pavilion are in full summer swing, drawing folks outdoors for live music and food truck eats. Consider this an opportunity to escape the buzz of the city for an evening. This Friday, Aug. 8, you can count on Route 6 Band, Momma’s BBQ, and totally free admission.

Festival

We’ve had a busy month so far, and we’re keeping the momentum up with Carytown’s summer-smash Watermelon Festival on Sunday, Aug. 10. Celebrate the 43rd year of this community tradition with 100+ vendors, 80+ musicians, and plenty of family-friendly activities.
Back in 2007, Virginia ranked No. 1 as the state with the most vanity plates. We’re requesting a new study to see if we hold the top spot. Richmonders are accustomed to a little silly signage, from plates and bumper stickers to quirky trail markers — just browse this Reddit thread for proof.

The Wrap

While on the phone with Sefton Coffee’s owner, Jennie Skinner shared that they’re very proud of the matcha they source — Arteo, a family-owned organic tea importer that only partners with small-batch farms.

With the rise and fall of matcha trends in American consumerism, it’s reassuring to know that Richmond shops continue to prioritize small business, even when sourcing from across the globe.
