Cold beer + niche facts

An up-close shot of a beer with "The Answer" written on it (that's the name of the brewery). The amber liquid is in a clear pint glass on a wooden bar surface, with more glassware visible in the background blurry behind the bar.

News Notes

Cause

35 years ago, Rick Bridgforth started an alleyway garden in the Fan, which evolved into an unexpected community haven. Now, that garden is an underdog hero rallying thousands of Richmonders as looming apartment developments propose the garden’s destruction. That’s where the local campaign “Save Rick’s Garden” steps in. (12 On Your Side)

Transit

Traditional tolls roll out; All Electronic Tolling rolls in, eliminating stops for drivers. E-ZPass transponders will use license plate recognition to collect tolls from pass users + issue invoices to drivers without passes. Powhite Parkway will begin this conversion at the end of the year, followed by the Downtown Expressway + Boulevard Bridge. (CBS 6)

Concert

What do ABBA, Duran Duran, and Pixies have in common? They all inspired tribute concerts in Richmond this week. An ABBA tribute dazzles the Innsbrook Pavilion tonight, Aug. 7. Double Duran joins the Tin Pan tomorrow (tix are going fast), and Here Comes Your Band channels Pixies at Canal Club this Saturday, Aug. 9.

The Wrap

Some more info on the Save Rick’s Garden campaign:
  • Rick Bridgforth first started the garden in an effort to reduce littering in the alley.
  • Aside from hundreds of flowers, the garden features a central patio space with a table, umbrella, and chairs.
  • The campaign is collecting donations to support costs for legal fees, community outreach, and civic resources.
  • Memories in Bloom — a two-day event in early September — invites locals to write notes, draw pictures, and add memories to the garden’s wall.
