The Robins Nature Center at Maymont welcomed two female “porcupettes” (baby porcupines) into its family earlier this summer, and you can vote to help name one.
One of the porcupettes has been named “Sandy” — but as for her roommate and porcu-pal, Maymont turned to the community for ideas. Over the past month, anyone who donated to Maymont’s animal-care fund was allowed to submit a name for consideration.
The donations are in, and over 110 name suggestions have been narrowed down to five worthy options, now up to public vote.
Voting opens today, so cast your pick (no donation required) and wait in bated anticipation for the final announcement on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Bellevue is getting another retail + restaurant makeover on its main commercial strip, spearheaded by the same team that redeveloped the Samis Grotto building across the street. This time around, a one-story, 6,930-sqft building (divided into different business spaces) will replace the Lauterbach Electric Co. building on MacArthur Street, slated for demolition soon. Smallmouth bass may be the most common fish in the James River, but changing weather patterns have threatened the population over recent years. Fortunately, the Virginia Department of Wildlife has adapted hatcheries to raise upward of 80,000 new fish friends so far, a rare accomplishment in the world of fisheries. (WRIC)

I’m curious to follow the development project on Bellevue’s commercial strip, home to restaurants like Stir Crazy Cafe, Dot’s Back Inn, and Mi Jalisco. The neighborhood roots itself in long-standing community havens, which we explored in an interview about Dot’s backstory. What retailers or restaurants do you think would add to the Bellevue community? Let us know.
