Help name Maymont’s new porcupette

Maymont launched a public vote to help name one of its new “porcupettes” — a baby North American porcupine.

Her destiny is in our hands.

The Robins Nature Center at Maymont welcomed two female “porcupettes” (baby porcupines) into its family earlier this summer, and you can vote to help name one.

One of the porcupettes has been named “Sandy” — but as for her roommate and porcu-pal, Maymont turned to the community for ideas. Over the past month, anyone who donated to Maymont’s animal-care fund was allowed to submit a name for consideration.

The donations are in, and over 110 name suggestions have been narrowed down to five worthy options, now up to public vote:

  • Quillma (a play on her porcupine quills)
  • Rizzo (like “Grease” characters Sandy + Rizzo)
  • Prickles (to match her prickly nature)
  • Barb (since the tips of the quills are barbed to latch onto a predator)
  • Sallie (inspired by former Maymont owner Sallie Dooley)

The winning name will be revealed on Saturday, Sept. 6. In the meantime, you can always visit [name pending] and Sandy in person to scope out their prickly or not-so-prickly personalities.

Purchase tickets to visit The Robins Nature Center or book a “Porcupettes Up Close” experience, which runs now through the end of November.
